which env does immich_server need?
Currently in the compose file we source the .env file https://github.com/immich-app/immich/blob/main/docker/docker-compose.yml#L23
From the sample env file https://github.com/immich-app/immich/blob/main/docker/example.env which of these env variables does the immich server needs set? I am trying to re organize how env files are setup would be helpful if we knew exactly what env variables are needed for immich server.

I have...

- Your docker-compose.yml and .env files.
- Logs from all the containers and their status (see above).
- All the troubleshooting steps you've tried so far.
- Any recent changes you've made to Immich or your system.
- Details about your system (both software/OS and hardware).
- Details about your storage (filesystems, type of disks, output of commands like
fdisk -l
and df -h
).
- The version of the Immich server, mobile app, and other relevant pieces.
- Any other information that you think might be relevant.
Please paste files and logs with proper code formatting, and especially avoid blurry screenshots.

Is it the 3 DB related settings?
Please don't look at main for env and compose. See here for a the min compose and env needed: https://immich.app/docs/install/docker-compose
Yes aware of that, I was just sharing for reference where env files are sourced.
These are all immich server env vars? Or then need to be set for ml containner etc as well?
It says in the tables, which env's apply to which containers
damn reading skills need work
thanks
ML container also seems to be sourcing the .env file: https://github.com/immich-app/immich/blob/v1.124.2/docker/docker-compose.yml#L44
However I do not see any env vars in the sample env file that are related to ML container.
Wanted to see in case I am missing something, given my earlier reading issues lol
Right what I meant was the compose file always adds .env file to the container
and the sample env file https://github.com/immich-app/immich/blob/v1.124.2/docker/example.env does not have any variable related to ML container.
Probably just for consistency
right, so that when you want to add a ML env variable, you don't need to modify the compose file, just the .env file
is it worth logging an issue to break these out in out different .env files. I can log it.
Yup I get that point, it just makes it harder to follow what env is needed for what service
but with that link I now know 🙂
I wouldn't bother. The env may go away entirely at some point.
specifying the same env variable in multiple locations seems troublesome. Why would you want to name the DATABASE_USER in multiple files? Seems like it could cause issues when trying to change a value.
i had a bunch of duplicate .env files so I was moving away from using .env only for immich. I have a global .env file with shared values such as timezone, DNS servers etc
and then created .server.env .db.env
I agree with this
So i created a hack where in my global env file i creaed these vars and just reference them in the immich compose file
you're certainly free to alter your installation as you see fit, however straying from the official documentation will always make obtaining support when something doesn't work more challenging
fair point
i am fairly comfortable with docker and usually look at the diff's of env and compose file before i upgrade
thanks for the help today
The env will go away soon™️. Correct ML does not need the env file
Using a global env is fine as well
Ah nice, looking forward to that :).
I mean you can do it now
Just add an
environment
blockYup that's what I do most of the time
if a container ends up having a lot of em, i move it a container specific env file 🙂
