Dragon Age: Inquisition (verdi) not downloading

Running Heroic 2.15.2 via Flatpak on Debian Sid. I have DA: I in my EGS account, but it won't install - Heroic downloads and installs a bunch of EA stuff, but it doesn't seem to be downloading the game itself, so when it tries to run it, it just fails because there's nothing to run. I've tried multiple times with both Wine-GE-Proton8-26 and Proton-GE-Proton9-25 (using UMU as Proton runtime), and I've gotten various types of failures. Sometimes the EA App runs and is available for interaction, at least temporarily, and sometimes nothing happens. But the game itself is never present. I'm happy to attach logs if necessary - which ones would be relevant: Heroic or game log? Installation or run log?

To help you, we need a game log. Please see the following images on how to get it.

it looks like this affects EA + flatpak based on this past post https://discord.com/channels/812703221789097985/1306717697706561536/1306746156432232523 perhaps try installing the deb package instead and see if that helps

Also not working, but a different failure mode. The initial installation downloads EAappInstaller.exe, then terminates. Hitting Play then runs EAappInstaller.exe, but this just hangs indefinitely with nothing happening: Running Wine command: run /home/USERNAME /.config/heroic/tools/redist/legendary/EAappInstaller.exe EAX_LAUNCH_CLIENT=0 IGNORE_INSTALLED=1 Okay, @arielj here we are 🙂 Still not working with 2.16.0, both Flatpak and native DEB. Native with Proton-GE-Proton9-25 doesn't even seem to run the EA App at all - at least, I don't see the popup. Native with Wine-GE-Proton8-26 is currently stalling at "Installing Redistributables" (EA App hasn't appeared yet).

after those things fail share a log from running with wine-ge and another log after running with proton-ge I tried it today so I know it should work (I mean, I'm sure EA didn't break the compatibility with linux)

Currently, whatever I try just stalls at "Installing Redistributables (Epic)" - the last line in the log is: "Running Wine command: /home/USERNAME/.config/heroic/tools/redist/legendary/EAappInstaller.exe EAX_LAUNCH_CLIENT=0 IGNORE_INSTALLED=1" but the EA App doesn't appear and nothing else happens. In my current run, it's been stuck in this state for more than an hour.

you don't get this screen to popup while that command is running?

are you trying with flatpak or deb? share the logs of the different things you try when you tried with the .deb, did you check https://discord.com/channels/812703221789097985/1044301598018515105 ? there's a part about installing wine dependencies, that's needed when not using flatpak also, do other games work? even if they are non-EA games can you try installing the EA app directly with the Add Game feature? I think it won't show the game, but at least to know if it makes any difference if you install that there, then you can "install" dragon age and point it to the prefix of the ea app if it starts

Ah, I had forgotten about the Wine dependencies step when running native, since I've been using the Flatpak version for quite some time. When running native, I wasn't getting that popup. When running Flatpak with Proton-GE-Proton9-25, I get it, but nothing else happens (I click on the button, stuff happens, then the popup goes away and I end up back at the Heroic game page). When running Flatpak with Wine-GE-Proton8-26, I get a slightly different version of the popup, but the same end result - eventually it goes away and dumps me back at the Heroic game page. Right now the log upload functionality isn't working - the main Heroic log says: "Failed to upload log file, response error code 403 FORBIDDEN, text: Your network (2600:4000::/24) is blocked from uploading files."

I'm attaching a game log. I have no idea what "IMPORTANT: Logs are disabled. Enable verbose logs before reporting an issue." means - every log setting I can find in Heroic is enabled. I've been using Heroic, Flatpak and native, for a while on other systems, and have run a variety of games successfully. On this system, the only other game I've tried is Fallout 2 (EGS), and it works fine.

There's a checkbox in game's settings > advanced > "Enable verbose logs" for that disable the Use dedicated GPU check, it's rarely needed and in most cases it creates problems (DXVK should be smart enough to use the correct GPU) one comment, I just tried the game with flatpak and wine-ge and it's missing fonts, so don't use that, it will only create problems, wine-ge is too old now, use proton-ge I'm also seeing issues when testing the game with proton-ge and flatpak, so I'd suggest to try again with the deb or appimage and make sure to install the wine dependencies

genetic-orangeOP•4mo ago
Okay, I tried with the deb and all Wine dependencies installed and verbose logs enabled: no EA App popup, and no game. Log attached.

just to be sure, are you deleting this folder /home/USERNAME/Games/Heroic/Prefixes/default/Dragon Age Inquisition – Game of the Year Edition when changing wine types? just in case a previous install attempt didn't leave something broken

I haven't been doing it manually, but when uninstalling, I've always been clicking "Remove prefix: ..."

How to install EA Games on Linux

I tried manual installation of the EA App following the directions you posted. The first time I tried it, the installer launched and began doing stuff, but didn't seem to properly finish - I got to the login screen, but I couldn't find EADesktop.exe. I cleared it out and tried it again (repeatedly), but now the installer won't run at all - I click "RUN INSTALLER FIRST," but the installer doesn't launch at all (at least not visibly) and I soon end up back at the Heroic screen. I tried resetting Heroic's cache and settings, and even installing the app to a different prefix, but I can't get anything to happen.

hmmmm this all looks like wine issues on your system, cause it shouldn't act that weird, I wonder what happens if you try to run the ea app installed without using heroic, like... using something else like lutris, just to confirm if the problem is heroic or what
genetic-orange
genetic-orangeOP•3mo ago
Lutris fails as well: it goes through a whole installation process, which seems to succeed, but it apparently doesn't actually manage to download the app, since subsequently trying to run it fails with "The file /home/USERNAME/Games/ea-app/drive_c/Program Files/Electronic Arts/EA Desktop/EA Desktop/EALauncher.exe could not be found." I looked in Program Files - there's no Electronic Arts directory at all. So I suppose I'm dealing with something beyond a Heroic problem, but what could be going wrong? I have a pretty standard Debian Sid system, with no extra repos, and Wine and its dependencies installed as per the Lutris directions.

I don't really know, one thing you could try is to add the WINEDEBUG=+fixme or +error env variables and maybe when it's running the installer it prints some errors in the logs https://github.com/Heroic-Games-Launcher/HeroicGamesLauncher/wiki/Environment-Variables#how-to-set-environment-variables
genetic-orange
genetic-orangeOP•3mo ago
Not sure how that's supposed to work - there's no option to add environment variables until after the game is "installed," and at that point it's already too late, since the whole installation has failed. I tried setting +fixme there anyway, but it didn't show anything enlightening.
variable-lime
variable-lime•3mo ago
when you click the install button of the game it only creates the prefix, the installation of the ea app happens after when you click play, before clicking play you can change settings
genetic-orange
genetic-orangeOP•3mo ago
The Heroic installation page for DA: I states "After clicking Install, Heroic will run the application in order to complete the installation process" - is this inaccurate?
variable-lime
variable-lime•3mo ago
hmmm I didn't implement that feature but at least what I saw while testing yesterday was that the ea app is installed after I click play
genetic-orange
genetic-orangeOP•3mo ago
I tried running the game ("Play") with +fixme set: Heroic says it's running "home/USERNAME/.config/heroic/tools/redist/legendary/EAappInstaller.exe EAX_LAUNCH_CLIENT=0 IGNORE_INSTALLED=1" (I'm not sure whether it's using +fixme for that or not), but nothing happens. It then kicks off legendary to try to run the game (with +fixme), but once again nothing happens.
variable-lime
variable-lime•3mo ago
share logs always share logs after you test new things it could be that is not using the env variable for the EA installation, I don't know exactly how that works internally you can do this: - Add Game - title: EA app - select the installer as executable - click finish - now go to the EA app settings - set the WINEDEBUG=+fixme env var - run the app it should launch the installer with the correct env variable
genetic-orange
genetic-orangeOP•3mo ago
I tried your suggestion - nothing. Log attached. Thanks much, btw, for bearing with me and trying to figure this out!

I'm really lost, the log shows nothing, not even an attempt to start the installer, something seems really broken with wine/proton but I can't imagine what I guess the last option is to try to run the installer directly with wine on a terminal, outside heroic/lutris or anything in the middle open a terminal, go to where you have the installer and run something like WINEDEBUG=+fixme wine EAappInstaller.exe , if that doesn't show any output I'm out of ideas
variable-lime

genetic-orange
genetic-orangeOP•3mo ago
Okay. Running EAappInstaller.exe directly seems to consistently result in the app installer launching. It does stuff, then presents a "LET'S GO" button. Clicking it causes it to do more stuff, and then stop with a red triangle with an exclamation mark inside it, an offer to "Send error report," and an "Ok" button. That's something, I guess. Log attached.

have you followed my last link that talks about how to get out of the wine dependency hell? at least to be sure you don't have weird wine stuff going on
genetic-orange
genetic-orangeOP•3mo ago
I've added winehq-staging as per GE's directions, but no change. It's always the last thing you try! I tried actually installing / playing with system Wine (10.3 - Staging, installed as per the upstream instructions), and things seem to be working now: the EA App seems to have installed properly, successfully linked to my EGS account, and is now in the process of downloading and installing the game itself. (This is taking quite a long time, and bringing my network connection to its knees despite seemingly using relatively little bandwidth, but I assume that that's EA's fault, and not that of Linux / Wine / Heroic.) I'm still not sure why the normally recommended procedure of using Heroic runners just won't work here, despite working for you and others, but at least things seem to be working with system Wine.
