Unable to join multiplayer - Syncing Mods

I'm trying to join a multiplayer game with one of my friends and we get stuck on "Syncing Mods" before eventually getting lost connection. We've tried everything we can think of, even disabling every mod and trying a new world with new characters to no avail.
