Not a bad syllabus, but I'm not a fan of Udemy. They allow piracy.
Also, have you watched some YT or other free videos from the teacher? Make sure their teaching style works with your learning style. I'd hate for you to buy a course and later find out you can't learn from it.
Have you looked at some free videos on YT (or other video platform)? You can learn a lot from watching decent free vids.
Lastly, I'd suggest starting with https://javascript.info first. It's one of the best online (text-based) resources around for JS.
it feels for me not efficient to learn from text , its more easy for me to watch a video
I personally would look at the teachers first, Traversy has lots of videos on YT you can watch to see, or do the preview of the course first. I did Academinds JS course and really enjoy'd it but I made sure I enjoyed Max as a teacher first.
13eck amd b1 are sooo right about previewing the instructor !! I made that mistake with a udemy course where the content was great , instructor simplified and broke down concepts well, the course had crazy good reviews ; but something about the instructors voice was so incompatible with my DNA- it was physically uncomfortable to hear his voice , I have no idea which attributes of the sound (pitch, tenor, vibrato, etc) were so incompatible for me. Just bizarre how deep the discomfort went , like on a molecular level.
So random and disappointing but just wanted to share a testimonial of why that's such an important step to consider. Have run into the same thing with some other YouTube creators where I cannot consume their content, no matter how good the quality because of the sound of their voice.
this 100% like no shade on the teachers but I'm same boat how the person sounds, inflects, and overall attitude to teaching is a big one for me. There are lots of creators out there that teach that are not teachers imo.
Again though it really makes a difference if you vibe with any teacher in person or not... Best part about online learning is we have lots of people to choose from to see who we vibe with before paying money for a course.
Sidenote I can't do Brads course lol
because of that very thing. Like I like his story, he seems great... but yea not the teacher for me.
So i felt that and agree 100% with clever , the sound of Max sounds clenky for me , but the sound of Brad make me calm , relax , his tone is so good lol
im asking purely syllabus wise , cause when i asked some friends they told me hey leave it , just watch bro code on youtube and that will be enough but its not for me to sit and watch 3-4 hours straight video on yt , ADHD and all that π
A course is well thought out I would look at its structure and if you can get the same content from watching some of his YT or others then sure but ya its not the same. I'm for one happy I've taken the courses I have because of how they were taught. You can also ask someone that has taken that specific course like in his community maybe?
there are lots of good reviews , i got this course tbh for free from a friend
I wanna hear more thoughts about the syllabus guys π
It looks good to me, comprehensive. I find most of the beginner courses in the development space to be great, they all cover the foundations and have a similar syllabus.
My issue comes in whem you're done woth that and ready for "what's next?" ; intermediate amd advanced courses are much harder to find , especially when they call themselves "intermediate" but cover a majority of the same topics that are foundational concepts in my opinion so you're not learning anything new; you're just saying to practice rhe same concepts you already learned and that I'm already putting into practice.
I think you'll be in good hands woth thos traversey course - it covers a lot of es6 and oop and looks like there are plenty of practical projects to then practice what you've learned.
And idk if you already have a promo code but open the course in an incognito wondow and there should be a banner across the top with a "redeem now" link that will knock the price down to 19.99(at least for my location, price may change dependaning on your country and currency).
I think that the course creator still gets paid the same , udemy just doesn't have the huge profit margin.
thanks a lot Clever π
I feel stupid asking that but i will , how do i actually learn by watching ? for example now there is a lesson about functions , what now ?
Watch and do. Make something, even if itβs super simple or super silly.
For you function example, make a few functions that do something like log a number or a string. If youβre learning functions with parameters then pass a few parameters to use.
tbh when we learn something , we write it for a demo you know
A good course IMO should having challenges you do after the lessons. Build while learning and then have you build on your own. Then move to next thing.
If all you are doing is watching then there is 0 value imo
maybe you are a person that can learn from note taking but doing imo again is always better doing and doing again.
"You are not going to learn to skateboard just watching videos" - Kevin Powell
That's totally right , and imo there are challenges on the course
What do you think? @clevermissfox
Think about what ?
