Offload the CPU as much as possible
Hi,
I have Immich v1.123.0 running with a Nvidia Tesla T4. I want to offload the CPU as much as possible, so i have the
hwaccel.ml.yml
and the hwaccel.transcoding.yml
enabled in my docker-compose.yml. In what way, or what jobs, are offloaded from the CPU with this enabled, or how can i check this? The CPU still spikes to 99%-100% from time to time.
This is not a huge issue ofc, but i want to keep the CPU load as low as possible ofc.11 Replies

Information
In order to be able to effectively help you, we need you to provide clear information to show what the problem is. The exact details needed vary per case, but here is a list of things to consider:
- Your docker-compose.yml and .env files.
- Logs from all the containers and their status (see above).
- All the troubleshooting steps you've tried so far.
- Any recent changes you've made to Immich or your system.
- Details about your system (both software/OS and hardware).
- Details about your storage (filesystems, type of disks, output of commands like fdisk -l
and df -h
).
- The version of the Immich server, mobile app, and other relevant pieces.
- Any other information that you think might be relevant.
Please paste files and logs with proper code formatting, and especially avoid blurry screenshots.
Without the right information we can't work out what the problem is. Help us help you ;)
If this ticket can be closed you can use the /close
command, and re-open it later if needed.I understand that most of the things above are needed if something is not working or broken. I just have a informative question.
Using hardware acceleration doesn't mean the CPU won't do anything. hwaccel is fast enough that the CPU is plenty busy just giving the GPU work to do
Using hardware acceleration doesn't mean the CPU won't do anything
Thats not what im saying. Or expecting, im asking how i can check that its actually using the GPU instead of the CPU? Sorry if my question wasnt clear enough. I have edited the post.
by monitoring your GPU with nvtop for instance
Or checking the container logs, if it tries to use the GPU and fails it should show up there
[root@immich docker-data]# docker exec -it 0641f661c6a7 bash
root@0641f661c6a7:/usr/src/app# nvtop
bash: nvtop: command not found
nvtop is not inside the container
Outside the container only
nvidia-smi
works. nvtop is not known... well you need to install it first
Alright, ill start some jobs to see if it does something
I guess its working like it should..
I think i expected more load on the GPU and waaay less load on the CPU. Ill see how it all preforms now
Just consider that it might be doing 10x the load
The CPU is busy supplying the GPU with tasks
the GPU zooms through the tasks
CPU still at 80% but overall it takes 10x less time
