Venetica Gold Edition from GOG

When installing this game, all of my RAM and swap were consumed, the install process took 2 hours, it's the first time a game does this. Not only that but I can't even run it, tried several versions of Wine and Proton, to no avail. I've attached a screenshot and will also attach a log if requested. Forgot to say I tried the troubleshooting tips from ProtonDB and that's why I have a desktop there. I also need to say I'm running a rather... unique hardware here, but that shouldn't be the cause of these problems.

can you switch to proton-ge-latest, then send a game log after launching?

To help you, we need a game log. Please see the following images on how to get it.

if you are on wine-ge or something, here's the instructions to properly switch back onto proton

Wine-GE is rather old now (last release is almost a year ago) and thus might not work correctly. Please follow these instructions on using GE-Proton: 1. Head to the Wine Manager in Heroic, click the "Proton-GE" tab, and install "Proton-GE-Latest" 2. Head to the settings for your game(s) (icon on game card in library). In the "Wine Version" dropdown, select "Proton - Proton-GE-latest" 3. Rename your Wineprefix (path is shown in game settings), e.g. from current-name to current-name_bak. To clarify: Rename the actual folder on your hard drive, do not change the option in the game settings. Note: This will make game-specific configuration data (e.g. in-game settings or save files) unavailable. If this is an issue, let us know & we'll help you restore them.

So I really need the third step there after switching the Wine version to GE-Proton-Latest? Just rename the folder huh Alright done

stormy-gold•5w ago
yeah, wine-ge and proton use different prefix naming schemes and not switching the name can screw things up, i think (i could be misremembering tbh)

flat-fuchsiaOP•5w ago
I do remember in older versions of Heroic it would reinstall everything on the prefix when switching the Wine versions around, but not anymore. I use this on PCs with socket 775 hardware, to... well, you'll see on my log. It's installing a lot of stuff at the moment, apologies if it takes a long while now. What, it worked it launched now

What the heeeell Okay now I will go back to several games and yeet the prefixes before giving up Wow man, I feel stupid now. Am I crazy when I said this btw? Also, is it the Wine version I used then, Proton CachyOS, the responsible?

I feel absolutely stupid for not trying to redo the prefix, it's what I usually did on the 775 PC with Catquest Same, but mostly with PlayStation consoles (I'm running Linux on a PS4)

do you got a pentium in there? im so curious

3.20GHz, dual core I tried Venetica there but it didn't have the proper iGPU to even have a chance This is technically a GTX 1050, so...

I'm literally running Arch on PS4 Anyway let me see how well the game performs, before I mark as solved. The good old days of having to restart to change graphics

i dont recall heroic transferring data between wine and proton, that's always been a manual thing if you wanted to copy over saves or something heroic did and still does, auto install wine dependencies, before with its own database, but with proton-ge through umu now
flat-fuchsia
flat-fuchsiaOP•5w ago
I never had to move my saves though, at least with the few games I tried messing around with to squeeze performance. Even old stuff like Dino Crisis 1 and 2

fascinating-indigo•5w ago
you didnt have to move saves, but if you wanted to keep progress and it wasnt cloud saved, you'd have to the directory structures werent compatible between wine-ge and proton

flat-fuchsiaOP•5w ago
Ohhhhhh Well that was a locally installed game, sadly. Well my distro crashed and since this is a PS4 I gotta do a bit to get back. Very bad performance though, 16FPS with max settings at 1080p

AMD Liverpool, equivalent to a GTX 1050, but you choose the VRAM, in my case I pick 2GB

basically its a precursor to the chip in the steam deck

Not even a PS4 Pro, oh I wish I love how you guys didn't call me a liar or judged me for doing this like most would This is legit my best PC My laptop's a fourth gen i5 with 6GB RAM and no dedicated GPU, runs everything barely if at all.

i mean outside of being a bit oddball, ps4/5 and xbox series are all x86 hardware so as long as your os has all the drivers and such it seems relatively plausible unlike trying to do all this on a switch running linux x_x
flat-fuchsia
flat-fuchsiaOP•5w ago
I know people who have tried. I ran Android x86 on the laptop before Linux. But yeah stuff here works on PS4, but I have issues with brightness/gamma, it's either too dark or too low in some titles. Can't tell if it's a driver issue with the PS4 or with AMD GPUs, I never had a dGPU before.
fascinating-indigo
fascinating-indigo•5w ago
i'd assume its because its a bit of an edge case for the driver i cant imagine its support is bug free

Venetica looks fine except the awful lag. Tweaking this one will be a pain since you need to restart the game each time. It's being held together by a few people at best, I'm one responsible for testing, which is what I've been doing, which by the way thanks for Heroic :D Far better than testing stuff on Steam, the client itself is laggy while Heroic works fine even on my old socket 775 PC Even at 720p, the game's chugging quite hard, 11FPS on a cutscene :/ then sudden jump to 40.

oh yeah i couldnt imagine steam running well heh im glad heroic helps

On any Linux machine I run it, the web helper always crashes and requires several restarts I've spread word about the launcher everywhere I go. No matter what graphics settings I use with this game, it still runs horribly bad Literally lowest settings, main menu doesn't budge from 45FPS 💀
