Crash while downloading games

My bazzite desktop and gamemode is now crashing when starting a new Steam game install. No idea why but it just started happening today. Currently have over 40 games installed and I just bought the Last of Us part II and it threw a black screen as soon as it started downloading. And it reboots my entire PC back into game mode and if I don't rush to stop the download the gamemode then crashes and reboots my PC. I ended up canceling and retrying with the same result. I then tried a different game Lords of the Fallen and same result. It just randomly started happening and I really haven't changed anything since my last game install besides adding Cooler control and Razer genie to my computer. I've played all my games all day no issue and this strangely just started happening. I've tried running system update as well. I've also checked my Storage thermals and those never go above 45c so it isn't overheating due to usage. Specs RTX 4070 TI SUPER Ryzen 9 7950x3d 4tb Gen 5 crucial nvme 2tb gen 4 nvme 64gb ddr5 ram Os: Bazzite-nvidia-stable (gamemode)

It seems to be doing this during the Shader-precache install The first part of the download Just disabled allow steam pre-cache and restarted the download. No avail just ran ujust fix-reset-steam now steam wont open here is the first log

If there seems to be no fix for this would I be able to remove steam entirely and just install it from the discovery store?

Alright I'm just doing a clean wipe and going without gamemode. I honestly have no clue as to why my machine would just crash when downloading a game. It's strange This might be an ssd issue. I've never had a ssd fail but it's everything I go to install a new game the PC hard crashes because it's my boot drive.. I then went to do a full reinstall of bazzite after clearing the drive and during the install process the PC shuts down. ..

if it says "PASSED" it shouldn't be a problem you'd also get filesystem errors there's another user with the same issue of steam crashing on bazzite-deck-nvidia

Well would this affect a affect a complete reinstall onto the affected drive?

solved by swiitching to bazzite-nvidia-open (without steam gaming mode)

That's what I'm doing. The 4tb drive is completely wiped and I've tried installing the non-gamemode and during the install process on the completely wiped and reformatted 4tb drive the PC shuts down to bios with no boot option available

Try power surge, sounds like some stuck hardware when pc is off, switch power to off on PSU (or pull plug) and try to turn on PC, fans should start spinning for a split second and then turn off again then wait 20 seconds and reboot then try to reinstall Why didn't you just try to rebase to the other image rather than reinstalling? 😛 Reinstalling was unnecessary

I'll try this out as soon as it get home. Thanks. Hopefully And I've tried rebasing before but from game mode to gamemode and steam never repaired. After reinstalling gamemode from a clean wipe it started functioning

You can try completely deleting the .local/share/steam folder and then running ujust fix-reset-steam this will reinstall steam this sometimes helps with seg fault By the way, it might also helps to stick to bazzite-41 for now, as you're not alone in game mode not working properly on nvidia 🙂 when you reinstall bazzite, don't update and just rebase to bazzite-deck-nvidia:41 this will pin you to 41 for now

Tried all of that. But maybe it didn't work due to my ssd issue at hand Will do. I'm installing the Non-gamemode variant currently

Sadly everything was finally functioning well until the issue when I started installing games. I have 40+ games already installed fine. Played the last of us for an hour. Then purchased the second one and started downloading a boom crash Then it kept crashing so I tried running ujust fix-reset-steam and it deleted steam but never worked again. So then I went to re-install bazzite onto the current boot drive I was having trouble installing games onto and It crashed mid bazzite install 5x in a row. So I decided to install bazzite onto my 2tb nvme and it worked first try. That's why I was worried the ssd might be cooked .. When I get home I'll do a power surge. Then try installing the non-gaming one onto the 4tb and if it crashes mid install I'll just go with the drives bricked and $700 down the drain lmao I've had the drive for about 2 years so maybe it did finally die

you need to check smartctl in the bazzite ISO by using CTRL+ALT+F2 to get to terminal if it says "self test PASSED" then ur drives are fine

Will it check both drives and their sectors? Or would i need to run Hard Disk Sentinel or fsck? If both drives come back fine I mean.

No it just probes data from the ssd firmware itself It's from SMART I think your issue is just the installer being goofy, not your ssd

Well as i said earlier it worked on the 2tb. And installing games would crash it the same way the installer did I went from having 40 games installed to my entire rig resetting when trying to install anything on steam So prior to clearing my drive not 1 game would install Then when I cleared the drive the Bazzite OS wouldn't install either. It would crash the same way as game installs did It wasn't overheating either. Temps never went above 45c It says device successfully opened Is that the test or is there more to it? Nevermind I see the help commands It passes the Health test but I'm wondering how to run longtest smartctl /dev/nvme1n1 -t long Doesn't necessarily work Hey it's working now I almost gave up but I think a complete power down solved my issue. I'll update this post if I have any issues past the installation point
