Translucency - Topic of the day 5/4/25
Whether a property of fabric or construction, translucency can appear in all sorts of ways - is this something you embrace or reject, and why? Is there an "ideal" way to wear transparent clothing?

I LOVE SHEER FABRIC
But imo there has to be some intention to it, it can't just be like a jcrew tissue tee
ive never seen u wear any....
does lace count wtf bro
sorry for exposing ur opaqueness here
oh yeah forgot u owned that one nvm
i feel like embracing showing more skin and wearing semi sheer things is something that is slowly coming for me with time as i build confidence in my own body and work on self esteem. avoided anything in a white bc like “omg what if it’s translucent”. now i just put that shit on bc translucent clothing can be sooooo fun, i love the aspect of layering without having to have things unbuttoned if that makes sense
i've tried to do more actual sheer stuff in the past but found it a bit difficult to
1) find in a fabric that feels nice (top in pic 1 was cool but felt weird)
2) find in a cut that I like (the eileen fisher top i'm wearing in pic 2 felt very nice but the sleeves were pretty slim so I wasn't into that)
Now that I know a little more about what I like I hope to revisit this soon!

yeah a lot of polyester tulle fabrics definitely tend to feel odd
for a really amazing fit w/ sheer fabric I will have to refer to sibess's ro16 entry https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1353047724303585340/1365901547913085019
simone rocha also uses sheer fabric really well imo such as in this top https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1366899856416964693/1366901701885300819
and in this laundry bag ass tote

that i thought about getting
i particularly like when things are more utilitarian-looking but still sheer -- it's like huh??? I find it very fun
I really like sheer, lace, clear, mesh, etc. as layering pieces
Somehow i have zero examples of this
Time to put something on
I LOVE SHEERS
I love translucent fabrics but I tend to like them more on other people than I do to wear, specifically because they make me select my underlayers with the understanding that they'll be visible and I don't have many suitable underlayers for that, plus it usually feels more revealing than I'm comfortable with. But I love a sheer long sleeve. And very little is better than sheer on top of sheer on top of sheer so the translucency really has a chance to play

love when its just random jackets and stuff that's sheer
yeah!!!!!
I remember now @ana (death by art) has a denim jacket w a sheer panel in the back
So fun

Oh yeah one sec
adapt's shirt is fun with the sheer lace back panel too
I semi-regret not getting the Uniqlo C skirt as a layering element for over pants

Sorry I don’t have a good pic of it on me
I gotta admit I‘ve never really warmed up to wearing sheer clothing myself bc I never know what to wear underneath??
I think bralettes look amazing with sheer tops but I don‘t really see myself wearing that
Sameeee this is why I prefer layering!! I'm not comfy wearing sheer against my skin. I have a couple mesh pieces I only layer with
I have 2 mesh/translucent tops, one of them I use as a base layer and the other one I usually wear with a cami underneath but that‘s all I feel comfortable with as of now lol

the uniqlo airism undershirts in beige are a good option!
I've worn them under lace/sheer fabrics a lot when I don't feel like showing skin under them
I need a back tattoo to really make this fuck

Anyway it's good
Sheer cool
Really love the hologram type effect you get when you layer a more voluminous sheer layer over other clothes.
Can also use it to tone down a super loud print
Anybody here use organza? I’m curious about how delicate it is
I think sheer clothing can look really great but I’m not a fan of incorporating them into my looks and I don’t think they work very well within my personal style. I do have one runway item that I’ve held on to because I find it pretty novel

I LOVE SHEER :letsfuckinggo: :letsfuckinggo: :letsfuckinggo: :letsfuckinggo: :letsfuckinggo:
I like putting on a sheer layer on top of a hoe thing and claiming it's work appropriate
Whats the name of this🤔 ai need a sheer jacket/bomber lol
love sheer things
struggling to figure out how to wear them intentionally beyond not wearing an undershirt under a white shirt
*other than layers upon layers ie

I want this thing so bad lol

This is still one of the all time goated fit battle fits. I remember how shocking it was seeing you wear this compared to your regular stuff, very effective. I feel like someone else in that round had a darkwear fit maybe so there was like a ur angle vs ur devil thing going on too?
@elbarto 🐒 ascended at the same time which is also relevant to today totd, convenient

translucent pants over opaque could be cool imo
The met gala theme provided a lot of food for thought but this one made me think of this thread in particular— there’s a history to translucency in fabrics over sensitive areas (Victorian moralists all but verbally fainted in published social criticism over the trend in womenswear toward imported muslins from India— insanely sheer and worn as if not).

The authors describe this color as “lemon” — as in lemon chiffon, I guess? Gorgeous drape, beautiful hue pairing in the shoes, lovely textural contrast between pointed toe platform heels and the voluminous skirt and blazer, and there’s something absolutely delightful about those lace gloves— I guess im thinking of that video that went viral on the same day that Beyoncé’s lemonade dropped a few years ago. So much to love.
