file sizes different in icloud than in reality

icloud says i’m using ~300gb for photos. i’ve currently backed up about 10% of them to immich, and immich says i’m already using 171gb (this is NOT a problem with immich, as checking my disk space on my host machine corroborates this). this means that at this rate, i’m due to use about 1.7tb for what’s supposed to be under 300gb. i haven’t uploaded the majority of my biggest photos and videos yet, so it’s not that only the first 10% took up 171gb. is this a bug with icloud, or compression on apple’s servers, or something else?

nothing i don’t think this is a problem with immich or my machine though, i think it’s just icloud incorrectly reporting sizes

maybe it’s that the upload folder hasn’t been cleared yet? still that would be 85gb for 10% which would be ~850 for the whole library

if my photos are 300gb 10% of them should only be 30gb of files in my immuch library
