Question for dudes around/over 30
Hey 30+ people, especially guys who got into fashion years ago
How do you balance looking your age without looking outdated, especially if most of the stuff you like isn't in style anymore
82 Replies
What sort of stuff do you like? I think that's probably a good place to start
I kinda embrace looking a bit outdated - I like classics from coffee to beer to clothes to music
None of the slim fit acidic sour hipster edm stuff (or whatever is cool today). Give me dark beer, dark coffee, full clothing and classical music every time. (Not knocking the above at all, I’m mostly kidding)
Just wear what you like
Don't worry about what's "in style"
I got into clothes when scandi minimalism / slim everything / heritage stuff was the meta, 2014 ish
These days I still prefer minimalist stuff but it does feel kind of plain & dated compared to some of the more fashion forward younger people around me
Id challenge the thinking that following trends makes you look like you're trying to chase fading youth or whatever, just as id challenge the line of thinking that bucking trends makes you more likely to have a thoughtful or well-developed sense of style.
Just wear what you like, and accept that if it’s off trend that’s fine. If you want to dress on trend, that is also fine but there’s no correlation between that and age
Everyone and their mother wears wide pants now - skinny/slim is back on the up and up - no point in chasing trends
I would disagree completely I think! Obviously they are very expensive brands but some of them are really pushing the envelope when it comes to modern clothing. Brands like Lemaire and Auralee are pretty minimalist I'd say, yet are absolutely popping off.
What do you see the younger people who you would say are fashion forward wearing? What would you like to take from them and incorporate into your own style? Do you even want to do that? I think these are some good questions to ask yourself.
No joke, I feel like I see middle aged women slay with wide fits more than any other demographic
Also I’m just gonna say this: turning 30 and worrying about “dressing your age,” is wild, you’ll hit 30 realize that it’s just like being 21 again but with more money, more experience, more confidence, and hopefully more fun
Omg yes. 30s have been much more fulfilling in just about every dimension than 20s for me
I agree with the whole "just wear what you want" thing for sure
It's just weird feeling like you've aged out of a lot of fashion discussion, you know what I mean?? Like I showed some younger friends some slimmer SLP-ish chelseas I've had my eye on and the response was basically "ew"
At 30 I'm not trying to dress a certain way anymore I'm just tryna be me. If you're 30 and don't know Who You Are then what pants are right isn't your biggest concern. If you dress true to yourself and your lifestyle it's gonna look good even if it isn't "in style" according to the latest whatever.
Meanwhile they were super popular a few years ago
That's absolutely valid honestly
Because that's how they dressed in high school. All the kids with baggy jeans today look like kids when I was their age.
That's not to say don't have fun, experiment, or try a trend on to see if it sticks. But don't be so self conscious about fitting into a trendy in group bc that's like ... highschool style thinking.
Sal spitting facts rn
Ngl when I wear olive fatigues and a blue jacket I do feel like that Steve buscemi meme but I take solace in knowing most of my millenial peers won’t notice
SLP and hedi silhouette is back
It's a rebound of everyone going wide
5 years ago skinny was the meta and people went wide
Wide is now the mainstream vibe, so skinny is back for the fashion killas
The real truth of the matter is that at 30+ you don't have enough time left to live in agony. Do or do not, you don't have a lot time to waste worrying abt it grandpa.
Ha yeah that's fair
30 IS NOT OLD
It's not but it FEELS old lmao
It's not but on discord it is
At the very least it feels like the next milestone for "man I wonder if I'm gonna feel different now"
Wait until you turn 40.
I skipped unc stage and got grandpa’d 😭
Tbh I feel better at 30 than I did in my 20s, I treat my body like a temple
Treated my body like shit in my 20s
Lowkey thought you were like mid 20's you look great brother
Appreciate it 🥺
late 30s and i still dont feel this way
Also 100% agree I feel like a lot of people actually get to start living life in their 30's, because their 20's were spent broke as shit
This is me and most of my friends
I thought you were also in your 20s ngl
I was too broke to get anything but Uniqlo selvedge the last time that was the hotness, but this time around, I can spare some cash on some pricier full counts. And, I have a better sense of what I want in a fit independent of trends. Would have regretted buying $300 on jeans that were way too tight in 2014.
30 is not old enough to worry about this im definitely not saying this bc im over 30
There's still a lot of minimalist stuff you can find and wear. I think scandinavians have kind of dropped the trend a little bit but something like lemaire and our legacy can be seen as modern interpretations of that scandi minimalism aesthetic. I'd just try and pick some of that stuff. I also think APC is still a good shout if you like minimalism and want a solid foundation for your aesthetic.
agreed v hard
i'm 28 so maybe im on the young side of the thread
but I dont know if I could live without a little experimentation in my life
and it doesnt have to be wholesale trying new things or wearing things that are way out of the ordinary if that isnt you, but always pushing a little bit to see whats good
experimenting helped me get from here to there

For sure
Budget lemaire / allsaints type stuff with a slight alt/goth bend is pretty much where I'm at right now
Those shoes in the second pic are weird in a really cool way
do you have a good leather jacket
I have an old ass 80's tan leather bomber with some battle scars
And a 90's black leather & wool Cirque du Soleil staff jacket I fucking love
Looking for a black or brown double rider sometime this year though for sure
thanks! i was going for cool in a weird way, but i'll take weird in a cool way 😉
okay nice! I think that's a great example of a piece that looks better on older people than younger, and it sounds like it fits into your style as well
Both honestly! I've never seen anything like then
*them
Lmao the photos are reversed for me but either way good fits king :sheeesh:
thats so funny I love that
Atleast your smiling in the second one
wait which is the one you like
more
@isleepalott
The one where you’re not smiling, bro lost his happiness but gained drip :gigachad:
oh that is the newer one
is that photo showing first for you?
Yea lol I assumed it was reversed
anyway yeah plenty of good actual insight in here but put shit on u like and if it looks good it looks good and if it doesn’t gg go next
also yeah as evidenced by this statement some of our most unimpeachably fitted users are >30
ah shit Sal said it better alright wrap it up
don't ask for permission to do things you enjoy
*short of actively harming anyone
in my experience if you wear what you like without giving anyone the chance to object, people either get used to it or drift out of your life, either is a positive.
50 is different. Then you have to ask yourself if you can wear this item at 55-60. 20s to 30s to even your early 40s you don’t have to think about it at all.
Disagree
If im alive at 50 nobody can fuckin tell me nothin
The easy way around it without looking ridiculous is to do the Larry David (tee and cardigan.)
Yeah the easy way to wear clothes is to give up definitely true
I mean honestly during the peak hypebeast era that old guy posted up in full supreme kinda went hard
I don't really believe in dressing your age, there's no other hobby where any reasonable person would say something like this I feel like
Yeah wtf 50 isn’t even that old
Acting like your life stops at 40 or something. If I’m still around at 50 I’m only just getting started at having fun with clothes
Well my life is going to stop at 30 I think
Nooooo
Literally me. Turned 50 and just wore a denim jacket for the first time. Wtf took me so long?
Ngl what did take you so long??? Your mom never put a denim jacket and a big hat on you as a kid and went “awww look at my little buckaroo”
define easy define ridiculous
i think i get what you're saying (there is a point where practical concerns override aesthetics) but i think that's far less limiting than perceived - miles davis, nigel cabourn, daddy ralph (or daddy rick), walton goggins, and what seems like every other picture of an elderly person on instagram prove that
this is such a great before after
im impressed!!
❤️
Larry David is constantly mentioned as one of his industry’s “best dressed” so I’m not sure why that would be giving up.
do you personally feel larry david is well dressed
if not then that proves the idea of 'wear what you want vs what others consider well-dressed'
and if so, given the obvious difference in opinion then, again, 'wear what you want vs what others consider well-dressed'
im 36, been posting on fashion forums/etc since like 2008. wear what you want
He’s considered best dressed because he wears what he wants. He is the cheat code for dressing young as an old man.
For anyone who says or thinks you have to "dress your age", my counter is

And if you think "well he's an old man he should be dressed like Larry David". I'd say you need to find more joy in your life.
For most old men, dressing like a kid doesn’t = joy and wouldn’t bring joy. I think that’s what some of you are missing because you’re not old.
i hate linking the guardian but i attempted to find the source of the claims on larry david; there's apparently a lot of effort and fairly high end brands that form that seemingly 'nonchalant' look
How is 40s even old that's just like a guy
but more importantly
But clothes to one side, “a big part of it”, Diamond says, “is he’s so confident … those shots of him just sort of gangling, walking down the street” [...] Ultimately, though, it’s not particularly about fashion. “He mostly wants to be comfortable and feel like himself,” says Schilling.ironically i think the commentators are taking the exact opposite conclusion - the praise for his style was its approachability, rather than the fact that he feels good in it and moves and lives in it accordingly. that doesn't require a specific brand or specific set of clothes, just self-awareness
Effortlessly cool old man but very particular.
and yet most old men could put on those same clothes and not yield the same effect
dress for yourself
I dont think i have ever looked at larry david as a style icon lol
Its just like a cardigan and a t shirt, who tf gets inspired by that
how many times do you need like ten fitted strangers over 30 to tell you that you’re not only wrong, but you’re limiting yourself and your potential happiness + projecting that misery into the world in a way that is, at best, unpleasant
why are you making broad, negative generalizations like this about “most men” in a space specifically about enjoying clothes
touch grass
put on something cute and go pet a puppy or something
reigniting this conversation repeatedly just to say “clothes shouldn’t be fun when you’re old >:(“ sucks, here’s some reading
