Trying to install bazzite, python error
Been trying to install bazzite for the last 3 days, already tried using 2 flash drives, have downloaded the latest iso, have tried disconnecting all devices, have tried to put the drive in a different port directly into the motherboard. Been having issues with anaconda and python. Got to the installer screen once, but got a fatal flaw, exited with code -4. Would like some help whenever you can please 😄
my hardware is
rtx 4070
64gb ram
i9 14900k
Edit: Issue resolved, for anyone with an Intel i9 14900k, follow these steps! https://www.reddit.com/r/Bazzite/comments/1kl0iwb/comment/mu90qpd/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

* Have you tried a different flash drive utilitity, like Ventoy, Fedora Media Writer or Rufus?
* Sometimes the ISO doesn't download properly, sometimes it's better to download it with the torrent.
I have tried with Fedora and with Rufus, but I will try downloading it with the torrent! Ill be back soon
I've downloaded the iso from the torrent, then I tried it with Fedora and the same error arised, so I tried with Rufus and this happened:

Hey, I got to the installer screen after getting the latest iso but got a fatal flaw 😦

I'm back to this
Hi, it's now showing another error
I have flashed this drive way too many times and have downloaded the iso multiple times

I can't be this unlucky
insane idea
...try a different flash drive?
again?
maybe swap usb ports
will try it in the morning since flashing is very time consuming lol
good luck lol
I'd try installing Fedora Kinoite and rebasing to Bazzite. Then you can see if there is something weird in the Bazzite installer or not.
the port theory didn't work 😭

will try that
i think it's just something weird with my pc and linux hating each other 😭
tried installing the kinoite
but I got a black screen
Try the troubleshooting menu and fallback graphics
kay
literally nothing appeared

if you have multiple screens plugged in or any other unneeded devices try unplug those and see if it makes a difference
oof- was worth a try.
kay
just with the flashdrive and the keyboard (the monitor kept flickering)

Oh nice, new error (tried with the fallback graphics)

I'm sorry my pc is being so weird 😦
I really wanna install bazzite but it doesn't really want me to
Got once to the installation screen, but got a fatal flaw when installing it

is secure boot off?
yee
Hmm you've been struggling to install for 3 days. I'd try something else, maybe Nobara, see if that installs
One thing to add, may be nothing, but are you validating the checksum before and after you move it to the flash drive? Mine would always corrupt on slower USB sticks ont he first try and i had to do it again because of some kind of hiccup. Just a thought.
oh I haven't done that, how do I validate the checksum?
So once you download the .iso you can run a checksum outlined a this point.
https://youtu.be/pbxM_1ZJCCc?t=112
he downloads the checksum with it, and when you move it to your USB, you run windows sha256 checksum or powershell whichever and the characters that spit out need to match the original, if they are off by even 1 character, it is corrupted somewhere
oh damn, thanks! I'll do that
I even downloaded the checksum but I had no idea how to use it lol
so if it's corrupted I'll have to download the iso again or just flash it again?
or just move it to the flash again*
first time using ventoy lol
the checksum file itself you just open with text editor and see the string of characters, once you move the .iso onto your drive. Once done, open powershell and CD into the drive and just run
Get-FileHash FILENAME.iso
and it will give you the hash back, and just compare it to the original one
also even though the video is dual boot, i recommend the ones on bazzite to fully follow through and see how they image it and go SLOWLYI will 🫡
I've been on this way too long to be rushing it lol
yee I downloaded the 7zip just to do exactly as he did lol
Yup, just go slowly again and confirm stuff
it's gonna take a while for me to copy the iso to the drive but I'll be back with news
usb 2.0 😭
Yeah i upgraded my USB BECAUSE the 2.0 kept causing corruption due to it being so slow
if it is corrupted, delete it from the usb and just try again.
or get a 3.0 😛
😭
lol I just bought this 2.0 just for this
if only I were smarter...
return it?
if from Amazon?
sadly not
I bought in a local business here
silly me trying to move the commerce
2.0 drives almost always had issurd with
larger files like isos
welp time to spend some more greens if this fails
the usb 2 ports arr typically fine. somethings usually fucked up with the 2.0 sticks
keeping a decently large usb drive is useful anyway
i use my 128gb drive a surprising amount
oh damn
might be good for backups right
photos and documents
yeah,
i keep all my photos on google drive
g-drive gives ya 15gb for free
ok the iso is downloaded
checked the checksum
it's matching
wish me luck
be right back
you moved it to the usb drive?
yessir
and checksum matches the original downloaded one? you ran the powershell file hash?
I ran the 7zip
thats fine too
kay
i'd get on your phone
for screenshots if need be, im here for now so i can try to help
will do
just ping me as im working atm
thanks for the help

anaconda really does hate me
WAIT
WE HAVE AN INSTALLER
Hm lets see
we have some pulse

I used the troubleshooting generic graphics
Farthest you've made it?
this is the second time I get here
😦 and this is the second time I get this error

Hey look
reddit has someone with the same issue
https://www.reddit.com/r/Bazzite/comments/1gchnnw/getting_an_error_when_installing/
they fixed it by the top comment
are you dual booting or is this one drive?
one drive only
are you also like starting the install immediately from here?
like when you get to that screen
bought a new ssd just for this....
are you just installing?
nooo
I have the settings part first
lemme try and get there again
Lets start there first, reboot get to the main window
screenshot each step for me and let me confirm
yessir
feel like its just a missed step somewhere here
this one feels like it's just a matter of trying again

last time i got that far it also fd my pcs timezone
ok im back
Keep trying, also check your timezone in bios and check secureboot
I'll select english

check time and date make sure its right
then go to Installation Destination first
I clicked on the time and date

thats..interesting. its stuck there?
yeah
restart? lol
welp reboot, go to bios make sure time is good and check secure boot and turn it off for now, can turn it back on after
yee mine is off by default for some reason
Thats fine for now then, confirm time is good and then go back into the boot
something def funky going on there lol

just to be sure
(i searched it up and other os means that it's off)
what are the options in os type?

i'd do windows uefi mode
sure let's try it
boot mode standard or custom?
this is what's available on custom mode

1 second researching for you to not be wrong
take your time
nvm keep it on other OS
and the custom drop down is either custom or off as options right?
custom or standard
you were right about other os being off, thats so odd in naming
leave it on custom.
lets get back to bazzite. Time is set correctly in bios right?
tell me about it 😭 when I was trying to undervolt my pc none of the names were standard
yessir
eh i wouldnt undervolt unless you actually have a specific reason to.
my cpu was at 100°C constantly lol
i9 14th gen is terrible
but ok back to bazzite
Ya sure its not the thermal paste hah
i wish haha
when you get back into the menu you should still set the timezone region, but im assuming you can do it later, so just go to installation destination first.
kay
this is new lol

buffer overflow? try again lol
ok we're back

Okay and the first drive is your new one?
yes
it should be at least lol
okay click done and show next piece, it should show popup right?
yessir

okay reclaim space

cancel real quick and check that box that says free up space by removing..
then show me again
curious.
just goes straight to this

Delete all
then reclaim space
all is ready for extermination
order 66 executed
back to this guy

do your user creation
make sure it has both boxes checked
to give it admin
after that..begin installation and see what happens i guess
ok we're back

lets see
while we wait how's your day
lol im being distracted here while i should be working
lol don't worry that makes two of us
but i like helping people
if it gives you the same error, i found the official fix for it.
thanks a lot btw
i've been stressing out about this for these 3 days lol
hell yeah
no problemo. this kind of support is built by the community, ive asked a shit ton from the people here.
so if i can give back i will
can't wait for another distressed person to go through what i'm going through so I can help lol
guess who's back

back again
okay
CTRL+ALT+F3
does it bring you to terminal?
... i might have been too hasty
here we go again....
bruh you hit exit huh?
😭😭😭😭
ya nerd, lemme know when you are back lol
baksbsksbd ill be back in a sec
this is what im gonna walk you through but you can also see yourself
https://youtu.be/GRdz08hJByo?t=22
ill be watching while it tries to work
accidentally booted back into windows after 4 errors lol gimme a sec
imma also make sure that the iso didn't corrupt itself somehow
it shouldnt
its using it, shouldnt be modifying it
now it's giving me this one again

that's why I thought about checking for corruption
hmm..
okay well keep trying or checking, once you get back to where we were lemme know
yessir
oh
there we go
back for now

okay now you know dont be hasty
yessir 🫡
waiting

not pressing any buttons
lol
CTRL+ALT+F3
am here at the terminal
fdisk -l

too many lines for me to read there try
fdisk -l | grep -i /dev/

looking for stuff under the
Device
section listed in the video i sent above
okay so /dev/nvme1n1
yee should be the /dev/nvme1np1 right
mkdir /mnt/efi
done
mount /dev/nvme1n1 /mnt/efi
cd into that /mnt/efi
then ls

oops my bad
mount /dev/nvme1n1p1 /mnt/efi
there we go
it's empty
thats odd..
😭😭 where's my EFI
the entire /mnt/efi is empty?

run the fdisk -l again and look under
Device
any others that have EFI Partition? should be 600MB
that's the only one with 600MB
do
fdisk -l | less

and to confirm 1 more time, we got the right drive..right? is it difficult for you to unplug the others while doing this?
sadly yes
the person who built my pc did such a bad job
weirdly just the efi dir is empty

Hmm okay, well for just testing, mount the other one the 100M
and see whats in that EFI
that should be my windows one
Okay.

umount /dev/nvm1n1p1
then mount again but with mount -av
should I rm the old mnt/efi?
or maybe make a new directory?
no
its supposed to be blank when unmounted, when mounting its where you go to see the contents of what you mapped to it
it's still empty
the -av was for logs
verbose
i mean did it not give any output?
it didn't...

btw my error is outputting with code 4
not code 1
OH one secon then
I can't seem to find anyone with code 4 error
yeah idk..maybe go back to windows, open partition manager and use a tool to reformat it already to btrfs then try again? i gotta get some chores out of the way so ill be back
yessir thanks for the help til now!!
imma keep on trying
other part was to also do what they said above which was keonite then rebase to bazzite
same errors sadly
hmm yeah just try reformatting it as btrfs in windows first then try again while its freshly clean
can't seem to remove the efi partition
with the manager
you go do your chores!!! imma keep trying here
use a tool to reformat that drive completely
or look online for external drives and that particular issue
brb
code eleven now!!

interesting, check the whole mkdir again and mount it and see if you see anything now
try following here, i know its error code 1, but try here
https://github.com/ublue-os/bazzite/issues/1016
they link to here: https://askubuntu.com/questions/429610/uninstall-grub-and-use-windows-bootloader
what ya got to lose?
imma have lunch real quick and ill try it
I still got nothing inside this drive lol
it's 600MB of pure nothing
follow the stuff above i linked
most i can think of 😦
yee I have
when I get into this part there is nothing inside it lol

Hmm..one more thing, not gonna like it, but reformat your usb drive completely and use ventoy again
will do
I'm not even phased about it, I've done it way too many times lol
I'll try it again
i've done that and now I'm going to try it again
also downloaded the iso for kinoite too
but let's see
good luck
back to code 4 with bazzite
imma try it with kinoite now
kinoite is still going
it might be stuck but i don't want to interrupt
it's been writing objects
dont stop it
let it go
may look like nothings happening but then it jumps to done
ok.
im gonna idk
workout
lol go do that.
LMK how it goes with the install
yessirr
rebasing is easy right?
I've never done it this way, but one step at a time, once its complete, at least the hard part is done. then we can go through their documentation of rebasing to bazzite
Yeah it's a two lines of commands. The instructions are on the website to the right of the download button. There is some documentation with further instuctions
It's just copy paste 🙂
Hope Kinoite installs
Hello wolfy, sorry i took over here, trying my best
No problem, you've done a great job thank you 🙂
i can help others just fine, but helping myself is more difficult 😛
If you are knowledgeable about QtMultimedia or Mesa lemme know XD
me too 😭😭
it's still writing objects
That's promising
yeah! no errors yet at least
indeed!!
lol
I know that the Mesa drivers are built into the kernel.... and that's about it. Sorry 😂
Thats fine just wish there was a way to update it, i heard bazzite is behind their latest.
You can see what Mesa version they are on in here https://github.com/ublue-os/bazzite/releases, if test is ahead, you can try the testing builds. Looks like test and stable are on 25.1.0-2 though
says im on 25.1.0 in
vulkaninfo --summary
Sorry this is probably the wrong spot to type this in, would you mind if any follow ups in the QtMultimedia help ticket I have? even if its not fully resolving, i dont want to clutter this help ticket up 🙂
@Neutron hows it going? still imaging?yessirrr
any movement on the bar or words?
still the same

no movement at all
(forgor to change it to english sorry
The install seems pretty long. My longest install was 40 minutes and that was on a low resource VM
Thinking of that, if you have a spare external SSD drive and a spare computer, you can install it on an external drive on the spare machine and boot it on any machine. That might be something to try if this fails
sadly no extra external ssds 😭
If you have an internal SSD drive, you can just get an enclosure for about $5-$10
Old SSD drives, work wonders for testing distros
Even the ancient 120GB ones
sadly im already way over budget for this project lol
brazil everything is more expensive
i have cambridge exam prep classes now, should I leave this one running or should I start again before I leave?
i'll be gone for ~2h
should be more than enough time
but since it's not moving maybe I should restart the process?
what do you guys think?
@WarpedEdge (im just pinging cuz I gotta leave sorry)
I'd just leave it and hope for the best
then I'll see yall in 2 hours lol
thanks guys
Sorry yeah id just leave it. The only thing i can think of is maybe dual booting and making 200GB for bazzite on the same drive and making the external the game storage (thats what i do)
coming home wish me luck
it was still writing objects
back at it again

at least my pc sounds like it's working 🔥🔥
it doesn't sound like it's working no more
😭
now im really going to work out
im going to my gfs tomorrow
but imma try and buy a 3.0 usb stick
I dont know if its the 3.0 usb stick at this point, something tells me faulty Drive. whatever you can do, just make sure you can return it
which drive are you talking about?
I'm back home
just tried with the latest iso, but still no luck
as in the one you are imaging to, could be faulty?
I hope not, I bought it 3 days ago lol
but it's okie
I bought a new one from amazon
64gb and 3.2 usb
it might arrive tomorrow
Well hopefully that does something, but yeah the 1TB you have idk just seems to not be working
but maybe it was the usb, we'll see
oh you meant the ssd!
I'm pretty sure it's not faulty, since I can use it with no issues on windows
hmm no clue tbh then
it's worth a try anyhow
meanwhile I'll just keep on working lol
Can you install normal Fedora? Or any other Linux?
Make sure the USB is working correctly (copy the ISO as a file and do a SHA or MD hash comparison).
And check the hash after you download any ISO.
And I think Rufus has a checkbox to check if the image is correct after flashing it. Balena Etcher has this too I think.
I've tried installing kinoite, but it got stuck writing objects for 3+h
I've done the SHA hash comparison
I've checked it after downloading
And I've tried with rufus balena fedora mw and with ventoy 😭😭😭
Can you try a different flavor of Linux, like Ubuntu/Debian/Linux Mint?
Maybe it's a problem with the installer that ships with Fedora and Ublue.
Make sure you use the official Balena Etcher and validate after you flashed the image (maybe it needs a checkbox somewhere).
Are you using windows? Is it up to date and running an antivirus (the included is fine)? Maybe you have malware in your windows that is trying to copy itself to the usb or messes with it somehow?
We have to find if the cause is the actual installation process or an issue before the installation starts.
I feel like finding out if any other Linux installer works should be crucial.
I'll try when I get back from work!
yes to all of the above haha
ill try ubuntu when i get home
is rebasing from a totally different distro like ubuntu harder?
or just the two command lines aswell?
Rebasing is only possible from image based ublue spins like Kinonite, as far as I know.
But if Ubuntu doesn't install then the problem is either with the hardware or the USB stick or the flashing process.
If Ubuntu installs then the problem might be with the installer that Fedora uses. (Anaconda for Fedora; Ubiquity for Ubuntu)
aaaaah that makes sense
it's more troubleshooting the
then*
gotcha
yeah i'll get to it as soon as possible
imma install kali cuz I've done it before
Since it's not using the Anaconda installer that will be fine
I'm actually curious what the issue here is, because I never had issues with the installation this hard. And I don't feel like it should be a general issue with your computer since windows works.
haha you and me both!!
I do know that there are a lot of issues regarding my cpu in general but idk if that would affect this
i9 14900k is not a good one
Did you download the correct ISO for Bazzite? The one with Nvidia drivers for newer GPUs.

yessir
kali installed with no issues whatsoever!

Then we will assume that the computer is good, the USB flash drive is good, the downloaded ISO is good, and the flashing process works good
Next try to install regular Fedora.
If that works then there's an issue with ublue.
If that doesn't work then there's an issue with the anaconda installer
What might solve your problem is put your SSD into another computer and install bazzite, and then put your ssd back into your computer
my ssd is a m2 and I don't have another pc to pluck it in 😭
I'll try it
can I rebase from gnome (silverblue) to kde bazzite?
I think so, since it's atomic
Don't, you need reinstall to switch de
kay
I tried installing kinoite again, but still no luck 😦
Hey, you can absolutely rebase from Silverblue to Bazzite KDE, that's exactly what I did on my HTPC, had SB installed since version 39 and everything works just like it should.
The only problem could be theming from gnome and kde interfreing, if you choose the theme from kde settings it should just work, otherwise manually delete old gnome folders and you're good to go👍
do note the issue is far more complicated than theming, if you decide to do it expect no support from the team
im gonna just wait for my new usb to arrive and try again...
Can you try regular fedora kde? Not silverblue or kinonite https://fedoraproject.org/kde/
The Next Generation Personal Desktop
A customizable high-quality desktop, built on the latest open source technology. Trusted, powerful and easy.
Because if that fails too then the issue is with the installer Fedora and Ublue uses, Anaconda.
yessir
will download it
does this one come with support from the team tho? 👀
It can't be rebased or anything like that, if you mean that
But if that works then there's an issue with atomic / ublue specifically, which can be fixed by the ublue people
If regular Fedora doesn't work then there's an issue with Anaconda installer in general
You could try to run a VM on your installed system, and pass through your m.2 SSD as the storage device for the VM (chatGPT can help). Then run the installer for bazzite inside the VM onto the m.2 ssd. Then reboot into the SSD.
For this to work you need your working system to be installed on a separate SSD
in theory my new flash drive arrives today, so i'm waiting for that
New flash drive arrived, am trying to install, fingers crossed!!
:(((

I just wish I knew what code -4 meant
might try that tbh
kinoite keeps writing objects and bazzite keeps giving me code -4

oh well
Is the SSD good? Or does it have bad sectors or you partitioned it too small?
the ssd is working well
it's completely empty
partition wise aswell
Maybe try Nobara. You'd want to install the Nobara-42-Steam-HTPC-NV-2025-05-13.iso from https://nobaraproject.org/download-nobara/ it's a really good distro for gaming and you getting nowhere with Fedora/Ublue images.
I'll try it...
Nobara did work!
I'd like to thank everyone that helped me in this thread, it meant a lot that you guys took the time to help me and even though i couldn't get it to work I'm grateful for the help!!
...
I might have a solution
but I will be back soon with the answer
My guys
I'm talking with you directly from Bazzite.
@WarpedEdge thanks for everything my friend!
It was an issue with my CPU in the end
I'm going to link the answer to my reddit comment that was what helped me

As mentioned in the comment, I think it's an upstream issue with Anaconda and something about the 14900K. The latest ISOs of Bazzite, Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora (immutable and non-immutable), Mint, etc all present this behavior for me. Older ISOs work fine. (~pre October 2024) This issue seems too uncommon to be every 14900k based off how few posts I've found about it. Looks like Neutron has the exact same issue i have had.

Oh wow. That's good news. 🎉 your tenacity is very impressive. Well done 🙂 Interesting solution I would never have thought of that, install an ancient version of Kinoite and then update and rebase to Bazzite 😂
haha I'm not gonna lie, I had already given up but Snomels came in clutch with the right answer lol
I've been trying to install bazzite for a couple of days, sometimes it's freezing sometimes blackscreen
I even tried installing fedora kinoite 35 and then upgrade, but it's freezing during the installation I've tried different USB sticks, I've made sure the sha256 is the same, I've looked into bios and everything, I'm on prime z790-p, bios 3004, gtx 1070, 16gb ddr4, i7 8700k
Secure boot and fast boot are both off
I can't get any error messages because it just freezes
I've tried installing nobara, bazzite and old fedora, but no luck

follow these steps https://www.reddit.com/r/Bazzite/comments/1kl0iwb/comment/mu90qpd/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

should help!
I did, didn't work :c
hmmm...
It's so weird, I wish I was able to get my hands on the errors
i have the same hardware on hand. I can copy your system and see if i can replicate the issue this weekend.
I've gone through bios and made sure everythings alright, but it's still acting up, even tried installing it on my laptop(which was flawless) and move it to my desktop (both being nvidia intel)
OS just keep freezing or I get blackscreens
got anything non-essential plugged into the PC via USB? I had an external SSD that was causing bazzite to freeze/refuse to boot. If you do, try booting with only keyboard/mouse/boot usb plugged in
I dont have any storage being plugged in, got my mic, headset, mouse, keyboard, webcam and bluetooth adapter
I managed to boot after I installed bazzite on my laptop and moved the ssd to my pc, but like 30-300 sec into using it, it kept freezing/blackscreening
I would try without the mic, headset, webcam, and Bluetooth for science
I'll see if I'll get around to it tonight
