Transferring a domain between two CloudFlare accounts

The person that owned the domain in question unfortunately passed away earlier this year, so we are trying to transfer it to my account. We got access to his account, and have initiated the transfer after exporting/importing the DNS data to a new setup in my account, but it seems to have an issue with my DNS servers being ashton/anna, but his existing DNS servers being thea/graham (both being at *.NS.CLOUDFLARE.COM). There is no obvious way to change it on either end. Cloudflare's support system seems to have trouble today, so I am asking here instead.

This is the instruction I get, but there's no obvious way to to this in the Cloudflare UI

The domain is using CF Registrar, and if so, you went through the "Move to another account beta" option?

Yes

What's the status of it in the new acct, under Domain Registration -> Manage

There was an option to accept, I clicked it (why is that not shown in the main UI? 😅 )

Did you manually add the website in the new acct, or was it automatically added from the transfer?

I exported the record from the previous account and imported it here

so you created the zone/website in the new acct before the transfer made it automagically? possible that messed with it what's the status under Domain Registration -> Manage now?

Yes, I was instructed to create one The instructions are all over the place, it really needs to be more clear if there's an easy step for CF-to-CF transfer where everything Just Works

it more recently changed from being support ticket only to semi-automated

So I think the transfer succeeded

you're right though, the new way does say add the domain ahead of time, if you're doing it that way you followed the right steps: https://developers.cloudflare.com/registrar/account-options/inter-account-transfer/ The invalid nameservers is only checked periodically, possible it just needs more time

OK

you can use one of the whois utilties online (or share the domain name) and see if it's now using anna and ashton

Will do Thanks for your help. And, that Domain acceptance notification needs to be top level in the UI 😄 Ah, you are not actually working at CF, ignore those complaints then 😛 Do I need to manually enable DNSSEC and transfer locks now?
Name Server: ANNA.NS.CLOUDFLARE.COM Name Server: ASHTON.NS.CLOUDFLARE.COM

I would wait until the zone/website in your new acct is marked Active before doing dnssec, but could relock yea
limi
limiOP•6mo ago
It is saying Active now Is DNSSEC locking, or are they two different options?
Chaika
Chaika•6mo ago
nice, then yea you need to re-enable manually dnssec two different options
limi
limiOP•6mo ago
OK, will look for them

Dnssec is about making DNS Resolution more secure, by Cloudflare cryptographically signing DNS Responses and having DNS Resolvers (like Google's Public DNS 8.8.8.8, or Cloudflare's 1.1.1.1, or your ISP's operated one) verify them. "the response containing the A record/ip address for website.com is legit/did come from the real website operator" It's under your website in the Websites tab, DNS -> Settings -> top option is DNSSEC https://dash.cloudflare.com/?to=/:account/:zone/dns/settings Transfer lock is under Domain registration -> Manage Domain -> Manage -> Configuration "Transfer to another registrar", it's about stopping the domain from being transferred to a different registrar away from you Dnssec is more optional, just an extended security thing.
