Tee sleeves extending past short sleeve shirts?

The first tee is a buck mason 90s boxy fit and the second is a uniqlo airism oversized, both in medium underneath medium shirts. Unfortunately, these two styles make up the bulk of my tee rotation, so this has the potential to happen a lot. I don't think it's automatically terrible, although I do think in the second photo it might be excessive. I've seen Matheson and others do it intentionally, but that's typically in the context of fits that are grungier and more vintage. Under what circumstances does it tend to work and when is it probably better to avoid?

Literally ran into the same thing yesterday, I just tried cuffing the bottom tee over the top one. Maybe it looks lame but I liked it. In both your photos it doesn’t look bad to me tho

imo it looks bad and unintentional. a tank would fix this & look a little more visually interesting.

Carrion seems like someone smart about fashion and they have a check next to their name so I am changing my opinion to say it looks bad and unintentional too

Tbh i think the cuff + tucked in shirt looks more intentional than just poking out. but still agree tanks just work here

tanks are so good

@oman121 @carrion @EntMoth I tend to agree from a general aesthetic standpoint that tanks are superior here and the sleeve situation isn't ideal (I didn't wear either of these out), but in my particular case, I think exposing more decolletage while being pale and not particularly in shape doesn't necessarily look great either, and the larger neck opening on most tanks makes my torso proportions look off imo maybe just cut the sleeves off of some of my existing tees if I don't like the way a deeper neckline looks? or roll the sleeves underneath, or would that add too much bulk?
Walmart the Conqueror
hey man respectfully what does decolletage mean

interpassivityOP3w ago
cleavage essentially not that I have cleavage, but I do think my collorbone game isn't strong enough to look good in tanks
Walmart the Conqueror
I think you should give it a shot and see how you feel about it

im not gonna be precious with you here, u cited Matty Matheson as like inspo or whatever and dude is easily 3x ur size. Genuinely your paleness and body size have absolutely fuckall with what im concerned with. The tshirt + open button down looks like dog ass in basically every single iteration ive seen because it creates an uninteresting shape, serves no practical purpose, and TO ME signals that the dude wearing it is a guy who has only ever worn tshirts and wants to "dress it up a bit" but the whole thing fails to be casual or formal in any capacity. You would be better served by losing the undershirt and buttoning up the shirt while leaving the top 1 or 2 unbuttoned tbh.

I mentioned him because he does wear tees under ss button ups and sometimes the sleeves are not shorter, but yeah, he also manages to wear tanks and look put together this is what I actually ended up doing with the first look
Walmart the Conqueror
honestly I used to be super averse to wearing tanks until about a year ago. it turned out to mostly just be a confidence thing
carrion
carrion3w ago
like even in this tho the tee has a fucked up loose collar which breaks up the lines & gives the fit some character. If youve got a crisp crew neck under a button down that's hitting at the exact same spot it just feels unintentional

I think part of my problem is that to find ones that have a less form fitting, underwear vibe, you have to size up, but then in a large at 5'7", the overall length is way too long to have the option to wear untucked which is what I'd prefer with something like these drawstring shorts

matty matheson has some really awesome fits and a healthy take on fashion, but I don't think tshirt under camp collar shirt should be the takeway from his style

this does lok betted because of that neck but it aso helps that he has something else creating balance there with his tats

does anyone make a tank with a boxier, cropped fit? I end up wearing a lot of pants when it's hot that wouldn't work as well when tucking, like these or other drawstring options like outlier ramiefall 107s (maybe that's a personal preference too, but tucking without a belt in those style of pants looks like pajamas to me)

pinkkea3w ago
you can raw hem a tank or anything
oman121
oman1213w ago
looser fit probably most tanks are long because with some exceptions they expect you to tuck them in
pinkkea
pinkkea3w ago
it’ll just curl up it’s fine i’ve done it on tons of tees don’t cut too short, leave room for the curling
oman121
oman1213w ago
yeah imo finding on you like and chopping it may an idea idk if ive ever seen a cropped tank
Walmart the Conqueror
when I wear a tank untucked I usually fold it/flip the end up
oman121

anyway this is a pretty close fit of his with a tank and imo its just better

agree, with proper pants it can work, but my point was that I'm not always wearing jeans or chinos, especially in summer, and a lot of options for really hot weather do end up being linen or ramie super casual pants that often have drawstrings, but even without a drawstring tucking into an elastic waistband looks off to me
raisinpie
raisinpie3w ago
I wore this in a new York summer, like 90 degrees and humid. Drawstring pants. You can do it

carrion

IMO tucking into elastic pants isn't really an issue or even the issue here. Like tucking into an elastic waistband can just make an already weak fit into a weaker one but it won't brick a good fit automatically.

raisinpie3w ago
I really feel like, based on your comments in this thread, you just gotta try things. It's not always gonna work out but you'll never know otherwise
interpassivity
interpassivityOP3w ago
I still think an untucked or partially tucked tank like seen there would work a lot better for me personally, but I have yet to find any that fit that way out of the box
oman121
oman1213w ago
i mean like pinkkea said if they all fit long, cuting them is an option
interpassivity
interpassivityOP3w ago
I will experiment with cutting some to size, but I also think when you size up you get a much deeper neckline, which I am still less certain will work (with Matheson, his tats definitely do a lot to fill that void created by the oversized neck)

Again it 100% depends on the cut of the garment. There are tees out there that aren't crew neck. Something like the wythe tees might be a good place for you to start, but they aren't thick or boxy

interpassivityOP3w ago
I don't think that's a super deep neckline either though, most wife-beater style tanks are going to be a lot deeper

ribbed tanks**

interpassivityOP3w ago
I tried a boat neck at buck mason the other day, kind of hated it for the same reason despite liking the pattern and cut elsewhere
oman121
oman1213w ago
I think that's what they are saying tho, you don't have to go crazy deep on the neckline, just something to change it up from the really high one on the tees you are wearing
interpassivity
interpassivityOP3w ago
sorry, I know that isn't the preferred nomenclature what do you call that kind of tank when it's not ribbed? A line? not a-line, but I want to say a something maybe I still have ptsd from deep v's in the 2010s, but I just think oversized necks make my proportions look off

has has it really been jokes aside do you have any necklaces? those can help fill in the gap with a deep neckline

it does sit better like that, I attached it about 2" shorter to bring it up to around 19" I think I will get it shortened and start wearing it, but I still think it's pretty thick though and might prefer something in 4-5mm instead of 7mm

I managed to try this on at the store yesterday, and it's way too cropped even in XL. I also tried the BR version of the same women's tank, and it's a bit longer but has a neck that makes it almost indistinguishable from a crew

pinkkea
pinkkea2w ago
oh i see. if you can, try uncropped boxy womens tanks if you can find any. which probably will run a little shorter in the body than mens still but maybe easier to just figure out the exact length you want and search thru retailers that have garment measurements eg uniqlo, everlane, ssense
interpassivity
interpassivityOP2w ago
I don't think many are going to be in the goldilocks zone where they're not too long but also not too short when worn untucked with mid to low rise pants, so I'll probably just try to find one where I like the material and neckline then crop it myself
