looking for basic japanese selvedge denim upkeep
Basically title, I picked up a pair of 14.8 oz selvedge denim jeans from japan blue jeans and am looking for basic upkeep. i’ve looked at a few guides on reddit and want to know how much of that maintenance is legitimate and how much of it is babying a material designed to be worn. someone stop me before i put the jeans in da bathtub 🛀

You can just wash em in the machine
My go to is;
Turn inside out to prevent any risk of marbling
Wash at 30C
Sometimes I'll turn the spin down in my machine if I remember
Wash jeans by themselves just so the indigo bleed doesn't accidentally dye other clothes
Hang dry (don't have a dryer)
You don't need to overthink it in my experience and definitely ignore the reddit denim advice
tyty thank you for protecting my freezer
One thing to add, my experience has only been with stuff that is already one wash so most of the shrink has been taken out
Yea a 30C wash on raw raw denim is gonna shrink em something fierce
Back when I rocked denim I used to baby them when washing by hand soaking in a tub with Dr. Bronners multiple times and putting em in a freezer to get rid of smells. Toward the end of my denim era I'd wash them on gentle, inside out, with woolite dark (iirc) and hang dry.
Much better hygienically and more even fades but that's just personal preference.

I just wash cold/delicate cycle then hang dry
All my denim is fine
I cover mine in acetone then set fire to them. Cleans right up.
I’ve been having issues with like residual soap (woolite dark) being left over after wash on cold. Tried adjusting soap amounts and still happens, idk if it’s because I have a top loader. Kinda just resorted to rinsing them in the shower lmao which works but open to any potential fixes (sorry for hijacking the post but felt it applicable)
mine has an extra rinse toggle that I have to turn on for delicate wash, or it gets the same issue. if not, run it on an extra rinse and spin cycle?
Might be that, usually do low to no spin which results in the suds still being in the machine after the rinse. Was just worried about marveling
