Shoe Recommendation
Hello there. I'm looking to upgrade my wardrobe with 2 pairs of formal shoes. Been planning to get a penny loafer and an oxford/derby. What colors should I be getting? I'll be wearing these mostly for weddings and events. It would be better if these are two different colors. Thanks in advance.

I don't have the answers but it would help to know your budget
one brown one black should cover most bases
Also - contexts for both would be helpful. (IE do you work in an office, or do you just like looking fly on your grandmothers stoop.)
Thanks for your reply. I found a local store for an affordable price. So budget wouldn't be a problem đ
Start with one pair, in brown, then reasses. I only wear black shoes a fraction as often as brown shoes, so 2 brown pairs would be a better choice for me.
Thanks. I've updated the message
Thank you. Coffee brown or any other brown in specific?
Well, what will you wear them with? Without knowing that, I'd say a medium brown. Not too light, not too dark.
What you donât want to get is a pair of tan shoes for your first pair. I find that they always stand out against a suit in particular in the worst way. Iâd go for a mid-brown or dark brown. I would prefer a loafer because I would get more wear out of them. But if this is really just for more formal occasions, an Oxford would make the most sense.
Thank you very much for your detailed response
Piggybacking on this thread, does anyone have experience with Beckett Simonon's dress shoes? I really like my GATs from them and was thinking about getting a pair of suede loafers.
No experience with them. But I get a ton of wear out of Alden dark brown suede loafers. They have a pair thatâs similar to those.
Think theyâre called the Roy or something
Little rich for my blood, I was thinking like $250-$400
allen edmonds shoe bank or aldens/tod's/o'connells/secondhand on ebay are also options
Iâve purchased a lot of my Aldenâs second hand in that range (barely used too.).
But if that wigs you out, the Roy is a shoe from Beckett
Iâll push back on the idea you need oxfords. Itâs possible you do but theyâre far from the essential shoe many videos and âguidesâ make them out to be.
Of all my âdress shoes,â oxfords get the least use. And loafers get the most. Theyâre just way more adaptable. If you need to fit into a very narrow corporate or formal culture, theyâre useful. But youâre right, they are not essential by any means. Also those essentials videos are almost always wrong and give me the ick.
Make your own thread, this is a different question than op is asking.
