a little update on m
[2023-10-03 06:46:45 AM] : a little update on my work in case anyone is interested:
my consulting pitch is continuing to work. last month i did a “consulting launch” to my list which yielded two new clients, bringing the total to four. then some days later someone else applied to be a client. today i met with someone in person for a casual coffee, and when i told him about my consulting he said it’s much needed where he works and that he would suggest me to his boss. regardless of whether these pan out i can see that my consulting pitch is easy to understand and that it resonates with people.
because my consulting is now taking up so much time, i intend next week to propose to my boss at my day job that we switch from a full-time arrangement to part-time contract. in addition to lightening the day-to-day load this will free me up to, for example, attend more conferences, put on more of my own events, perform consulting work during regular work hours, etc.
i’m currently in the process of writing a book for manning about ai-assisted programming. i’m partly regretting my decision to take this on because it’s a bit of an irrelevant distraction, but on the other hand i’m finding it worth it because i’m getting to see “how the sausage is made” which will help me with my future self-published books.
i’m also putting on a conference in las vegas in the spring. right now i’m at roughly break-even. any additional ticket sales will be profit. in addition to that, me and my wife are cooking up a crazy event where people from the internet actually come to our house. at this moment i’m in bucharest, romania where i spoke at a conference last week.
so, things have gone in very unexpected directions for me, but it’s all quite positive. i’m feeling good about ratcheting down the coding-for-money income and ratcheting up the income from consulting and events.

I find it interesting that you've ended up taking different paths to the one(s) you expected.
What would you say was the key to that? Trying lots of different things? Being open to possibilities as they crop up? The randomness of the universe?
[2023-10-04 09:23:22 AM] : a big part of it was when alex invited me to consider not just selling products but also selling services (or something like that, i don’t remember exactly)
[2023-10-04 09:57:22 AM] : Makes sense! I remember when I first went full-time on my own business Alex offered the advice to not be afraid to do things that don't scale, especially at first.
[2023-10-04 04:06:38 PM] : this is great jasonswett!
[2023-10-04 04:08:02 PM] : products are just one of many vehicles to help people. Plus every lesson you learn from selling these other things, and every bit of trust and authority you build in the ecosystem from doing this work, makes it easier to sell whatever you make next.
that's stacking the bricks! you're doing it!
[2023-10-04 04:29:05 PM] : alex thanks!
