chelsea boots - too big for foot?

I bought a pair of chelsea boots and am not sure if they're too big. There is little to no heel slippage and there is a bit of room in the toe box for me to splay my toes, yet when I walk in them, I get a clacking sound from the sole hitting the ground. I have other lace up boots in the same size but narrower width without this problem (quiet when I walk). Would the clacking be indicative of the boot being too big, or am I just overthinking it?

Like you mentioned, shoe sizing accounts for width and other fitments aside from just how long the sole is. If there is enough room for it, you could try adding insoles to see if that helps make it more snug?

A clacking sound could just be the material of the outsole. Would necessarily be a fit issue Rule of thumb is the widest part of your forefoot should align with the widest part of the boot In general people wear too small leather shoes/boots as they're used to wearing sneakers which are much more flexible and forgiving with a closer fit
