eyeglasses brands
my glasses broke and i need a replacement from somewhere (preferably in network for eyemed)
any brands you can recommend? no acetate, pref metal only, bonus if titanium.
as for shape, im looking for aviators and rectangle/square with a “top bar”, or a round circle frame on the smaller side in rose gold colour

Gonna keep an eye on this but I’ll throw out there Zenni, they’re cheap af but I’ve found for the price they hold up really well, never have issues
(By that I mean I’ve only had to replace them bc of prescription changes. I’m sure the lenses aren’t as good as other places but they get the job done suitably)
do you have a budget?
Seconding zenni. I have a pair of glasses from them that I mostly use when climbing and they’ve held up pretty well
If you go that route I’d highly recommend shelling out extra for anti-glare + anti-oil lenses because I wish I did
randolph and american optical are the original browbar square aviators. for small titanium glasses, I think eyevan has fairly large distribution in the US.
going through insurance is a luck thing of whether your optometrist carries the brands/frame you want and takes your specific insurance
if you need cheap, i've gotten like 3 pairs from eyebuydirect and they have some good looking pairs. i think i got 2 at once and together it was 75 without insurance, and prescription sunglasses were 65
i have eyemed insurance, idk what physical stores are covered but here are the sites

i was looking at eyebuydirect and i liked some frames but they’re out of network
honestly if these websites give me too much cancer that’s my fallback
i’ll have a look at these
zenni looks pretty good
my budget for a frame is around 250 pre-insurance applied
i’ve seen a lot of luxottica fearmongering but idk if that’s real or just elitist behavior
I don’t think it’s that they’re bad quality as much as it is they’re a shitty company
my insurance covers a lot of the lens stuff so i’ll be able to get the bells and whistles
oh
why are they shitty
It comes across as a bit sensationalized but this has a good explanation https://www.latimes.com/business/lazarus/la-fi-lazarus-glasses-lenscrafters-luxottica-monopoly-20190305-story.html

Charles Dahan knows from firsthand experience how badly people get ripped off when buying eyeglasses.
Also they own many major glasses stores AND EyeMed
So they have like insane control over peoples’ access
And if the for-profit company that runs your insurance also runs the places that provide the lenses, well, there’s some misaligned incentives there
But as far as quality, hey they run Oliver peoples and those get recommended all the time
gotcha
well… if i find those other brands at local stores in network then i’ll get those otherwise i guess i’ll be part of the system
Well your insurance is owned by luxottica
All of the places in that image are owned by them
I’m not sure what kind of coverage you’re getting but if the frames are reasonably priced I wouldn’t feel bad abt it. But if out-of-network places are cheaper then it only makes sense
yeah i just checked, not a single location seems to carry non luxottica brands. i’m getting 120$ + some percent off discount on frames as well as a lot of discount on lenses
so i think i’ll just get something off glasses.com or lenscrafters
Depends on your insurance but you can reimburse frame and lens purchases, even from non in network providers
i don’t get nearly as much
like 58$ and no lens coverage
Why not just do eyebuydirect or Zenni for like $30? Still cheaper than in network, even after insurance
the frames on eyebuydirect that i liked do not just equate to 30
for two pairs with decent lenses it costs me about 500 without insurance or any discounts applied
can probably get that down to 300-350 with coupons and insurance
but i can also do in network and get more expensive frames for a similar cost
i don’t know the quality delta between ebd and something like michael kors, ray ban, giorgio armani
among these rounder frames, what looks the best?

https://www.lenscrafters.com/lc-us/polo-ralph-lauren/8053672797817
and what would have the best quality in terms of feel and durability
i’m a bit biased because giorgio armani is one of the few fashion big names i’ve heard of but idk if that translates to glasses
they aren't actually made by armani, it's just a licensing deal.
just a general rule of thumb, try not to be seduced by the brand, make sure it's something you'll actually want to wear
if you like the armani, i think the first pair is going to go with the most stuff, second pair do look cool, but require you dress a certain way to make them not look out of place. generally for the whole group, i like the first pair the best. additionally, i like the polo better than the bronze armani, if you're gonna stand out on materials, at least go for the cleaner look
Pretty sure Armani and Ralph Lauren glasses are luxottica. Generally the branding deals with clothing/fashion brands are done by luxottica. Nothing wrong with the glasses though
yeah all the brands you named and linked to are made by luxottica. the quality isnt a concern but i highly encourage you to look at zenni, they have a ton of styles and the quality delta really isnt that high unless maybe if you have something unusual with your prescription
150$ for the lenses even if the frames are on their own
college insurance is what it is
it’s not cheaper than in network, i checked
even with a 250$ frame, it costs me like 90$ and the lenses are 35 flat copay with everything i need
yeah i think it’s between the ralph lauren and the persol now
Maybe I’m just dense or missing something but I specked these out to be $47 with a random average prescription and the anti-glare, anti-oil/grease, blue light blocking lenses

Out of pocket
(Don’t mean to be annoying but I’m genuinely confused bc I’ve never gone through insurance and only bought them direct like this)
ur good - it’s cause im getting transition lenses
i do not have sunglasses and im sensitive to light
and i can’t get both glasses and sunglasses cause my powers too strong
so i’d need to get prescription sunglasses
transitions are just cheaper overall and also more effective (don’t need to also carry shades on me)
it’s not everyone’s favorite look/design choice but i honestly don’t know what i’d do without em
if i wasn’t getting transition lenses then it would be fine doing out of network since lens coverage doesn’t matter a whole lot
zenni also does prescription sunglasses
holy fucking shit im not giving this fucking company a dime
i spent literal days searching for frames
scouring for discounts
mapping it all out
and then i went to check out and my total went from 405 to 399 with insurance cause the discounts don’t stack
which is written in some obscure fine print
additionally that’s why their lenses are so heavily marked up with a default 50% discount
because it goes away if you use insurance
so basically you just get fucked
nice!
well. that was my crashout. sorry.
if anyone sees any frames that look like these

let me know. these specific ones don’t support my prescription
which place were you looking?
this was eyebuydirect
their frames were really stylish imo
i was thinking of just buying the frames and getting the lenses cut at costco or something
