Help buying dress shirts/pants/shoes for first job

Hello, I recently got hired as an engineering intern and looking to buy business casual clothing. I know my sizes, and bought one fit from men's warehouse to get me through the first week, but now im looking to get more (and better quality) clothing.

so far from my research, I know that SM have good dress shirts I am having trouble selecting the weave type (like twill, oxford, poplin, etc)

This is how the shoulder fit is on the shirt I bought. I had the associates help me and measure me. This is an 18 34/45 modern fit It’s too big right?

maybe, but try using the timer on your phone and taking a full length shot of yourself - we cna judge better from that.

ok ill try, the video I watched said the shoulder seam should sit on the shoulder, mine looks like it's sitting below

sure, but we also can judge whether neck/waist/chest look good which will help inform what to try next.

the sleeve length looks good not sure how much the back of the waist is due to it feeling naturally big or because of how it was tucked neck is hard to tell unbuttoned (though honestly i wouldn't wear this kind of shirt without a tie)

ignore this, just got hit with a $200 tarrif fee on checkout lmao probably tucking, this is my first time wearing a proper dress shirt im looking for a shirt to wear unbuttoned, what style would you recommend?

looking it up the modern cut sounds like it runs slim Slightly trim through shoulder; closer to chest and body; slightly higher armholes it might explain some of what's going on with the shoulder, less a matter of sizing and more a matter of the pattern not being ideal for your build specifically (which may be a problem with the shirt) what is your budget, what is your location, and are you willing to shop secondhand

TimEzzeOP5d ago
so I would need a classic fit? cus im a bigger build
zeometer
zeometer5d ago
classic is just a word they've chosen, other brands use standard or relaxed or they don't bother

budget is $60 max for a shirt (pre tax), I am in san Diego Ca, and i'm willing to shop secondhand if the quality is good

the measurements of the clothes are the important part if there's a polo or brooks brothers outlet near you they may have numeric sized shirts for that price or so, especially if on sale
TimEzze
TimEzzeOP5d ago
yes there is a brooks brother outlet
zeometer
zeometer5d ago
mall brands (j.crew on sale, banana republic/gap on sale, uniqlo) also an option
TimEzze
TimEzzeOP5d ago
polo too

if there are good flea markets/secondhand then look for older polo, brooks, ll bean, lands end, or eddie bauer

online retailers like charles tyrwhitt arent worth it? also how would I know my measurements? cus the person at men's warehouse measured me and chose that shirt
zeometer

charles tyrwhitt is good but relatively expensive outside of the bulk sale; imo they also run slim ideally you'd measure a well-fitting shirt and compare the measurements of any new shirt to those without that you kinda have to go off body measurements (which may be subject to error); while i'd argue it's best to get someone else to measure you this is a not-awful way to do it yourself https://www.wikihow.com/Measure-for-a-Dress-Shirt

you're better off not buying from someone like Tyrwhitt until you've found a shirt you like the fit of by trying stuff on in person, so you can then measure and buy accordingly from an online retailer. In person trying on can't be beat whilst you're trying to establish fit tbh.

but in this case i'd just try it on in person first yeah basicallythat
TimEzze
TimEzzeOP5d ago
so just try a bunch of shirts, or go off body measurements?

ok thank you both, tomorrow I will do this after work. How about dress shoes and dress pants? what material should i get for dress pants?

for "business casual" depending on the place you may be able to just wear chinos or slacks as pants (the listed stores for shirts will also have these) and for shoes if you already have a pair of loafers or derbies or oxfords they may work as well more than anything i'd only buy a couple of things until you get an idea of how people dress there - it might be more formal or more casual than anticipated

some people wear t shirts, but my lead and most co workers wear dress shirts with trousers/chinos, and oxfords, so im kind of trying to match with them I did buy a pair of florsheim from men's warehouse, I shouldve asked yall before doing that

- brooks bros regular fit tends to lean more traditional (read:1818) BUT given how much slim fit pervaded clothing over the past 20 years there's a chance it may be baggier by comparison. shrug it off, find a different brand - florsheims look good; wear them with khakis or navy or olive chinos (or jeans??? if your office gets like that) - allen edmonds shoe bank (or florsheims) as well are other alternatives for black oxfords; sales will get you to around $150 or so, maybe a little higher - the marks on the back are scuff marks; the easy fix is exchanging them if possible, the less easy fix is using shoe polish or smth like a magic clean eraser - find shirts similar to your measurements, try them on (for certain places like j.crew, check their size charts online first to save time in store), and see how you feel

no prob gotta stress to buy slow; people will probably not notice if you wear the same couple of shirts/pants but will definitely notice if you suck when working
