Running away with elytra in PvP
This is a major problem. It's completely unbeatable. How do other server owners combat this?

Mace combat; combat using elytra in general; temporary escape like in hit and run tactics
"temporary escape"... I can tell you right now if you ask 50 different people you will get 50 different definitions of that lol
the point is that completely disallowing elytra in combat is a bad solution
Either way, the only options you really have are either having rules against it or completely prevent their use

only need to do it once or twice
you could try adding a cooldown to using fireworks while in combat
do you know what happens if you drop ontop of someone with only 3 armor pieces and they start spamming crytals?

all im saying is that elytra is only gonna work in very very specific cases, and those cases aren't gonna work anymore if you nerf elytra to a point that you can't use them to escape anymore

how large would that cooldown need to be so you can't run away with tier 3 rockets anymore?

idk like 5 seconds? Could also make a plugin to force standing pose after a certain period of time. On top of all of this, combat log allows you to keep retagging while they are flying.
5 seconds? Do you know how far one rocket can get you? In theory, you can fly indefinitely without rockets (limited by the dura of your elytras ofc), so limiting the rate at which you're using them isn't gonna help much. Standing pose (assuming you mean touching the ground) would mean they have to scrape the ground once, and then can instantly run away again. If you mean just the pose itself, you could just double-tap the spacebar and do it. That's not gonna prevent it. Retagging them also wouldn't really do anything, as once they are far enough away, they can just land and wait.
so then put the pose itself on a cooldown
and cancel them from entering it (gliding) until the cooldown is up
So that you can only fly x time before it cancels your gliding and you have to spend x amount of time on the ground?

because thats really the only thing we want people using elytra for in combat
the same logic should in theory apply to tridents
Well for Mace that wouldn't be touching the ground then but just not gliding, which also seems really annyoing lets imagine you put on your elytra start flying realize you aren't on target so you turn around again to aim properly but midway you just drop out of the air and take a metric duck ton of fall damage
With this you still kinda have the running away problem, as everyone can still use Elytra but is just slower with it due to having to land or whatever weird tricks people would come up with (eg. use slime to get some of your momentum back and minimize the time on the ground etc.), you still can't catch up unless they make a mistake aka nothing has really changed

Either block elytras in combat and live with the fact that people can’t use it for anything in combat anymore or don’t block it, let people use elytras but don’t solve the original problem

You use wind charges and those wouldn’t be banned

I wouldn’t even say an elytra is used for mace combat in the first place, but I guess it is a little more convenient wind charge
you could make a plugin which limits how far away you can get from the player you are in combat with
what about if you are in pvp with multiple players?

best solution is probably to use the last attacked player

you and the mate would have to attack each other and both run away together before either of you get hit, if you can manage that then like fair enough
my whole idea is kinda flawed though because by running away you also mess with the other player because they’re out of range of you too now
its not hard to pearl, tap once and then dip with elytra, anyways my point here is that all of these kinds of solutions are kinda janky if you get what i mean

Disabling fireworks on hit is ehh okay but once you do fail to hit which is very possible because of how long endgame fights can last, youre fucked
tbh this is mojangs fault
But anyway, there needs to be a way to hit and kill elytra players whilst they are flying
I think that's the direction to go for a solution

Setting reach higher is a good idea. However it's a bit confusing, as a player wouldn't find this out unless you told them

maybe I could add a new type of enchantment or tipped arrow that homes in slightly and stops elytra flight? seems too modded though
I don’t feel like both things can exist at the same time in this scenario, you’ll probably have to sacrifice something
i mean that would make elytra for pvp useless again as you could just spam those arrows, especially as this would need to stop them for a few seconds fro using elytra if it just stops their gliding you'll be back at square one and people could still run away
