1st, they are just proxy's and VPNs cant stop you from being detected as a tor user and im sure you all saw sponsors for a VPN, even if the VPN provider says "they dont log" they will probably still log and the dumbest thing is some people think that buying in more private ways like cash save you from getting logged but still your using their thing so they can still log you and you can still get your connection tapped but they can do it at a certain point but idk what type of point and VPNs dont magically encrypt your internet traffic, because it technically isnt possible but VPNs are good enough if you are using public wifi (coffee shop, etc) but a VPN isnt very good with your own internet at home but a VPN is only good if you dont want to be detected as an alt but you shouldnt evade bans anyway and vpns sometimes are honeypots
But... not only a vpn can be sometimes a honeypot, this is a phone called the anom phone that claimed to be security oriented but the FBI got all the information of every user not only one, multiple did too

The main thing a VPN does is hide your internet activity and mask your IP from ISPs and other things.
It does that by simply changing where you send your data packets. In other words, it changes who gets to see your internet activity.
When it comes to privacy, it will really depends on what VPN service you choose. Choosing a top VPN service can be helpful, but even some of top VPNs are known to collect data.
In general, the most useful thing with VPNs is to simply just get access to more media, which you didn’t before due to your geolocation, and to prevent your IP address from getting leaked.
In other words, don’t use it primarily for privacy, or to hide from your ISP.

They can be excellent for privacy, depending on who you're hiding from.
If for example you don't want the owner of the network to see you're watching YouTube when you're supposed to do your homework, a VPN basically just defeats any local traffic sniffing a network owner can perform.
