New players not sticking around, how to fix?
I got a Minecraft SMP that's been running for 2+ years and has assembled an active core community at the start, but since a while there have barely been any new players join and stick around for more than a couple months.
Season 2 has been running since January.
Discord server is more active than the SMP, there are VCs everyday

What I did/do is hold events and give out custom items with custom models via server resourcepack
i guess if your players canβt find a reason to be on, they wonβt be on
Itβs kinda like a paradox. More will join if there are people online, but nobody wants to be the first online

Ig what I'm asking is whether there's anything I can do to improve the server specifically for new folks, as the core community seems to be mostly satisfied
How many player joins are you getting a day?
If you are getting people to stay for a week you are doing well. Id suggest putting on unique events to keep people entertained
Your main issue might just be advertisement though
Okay, I like to do this. Reset everything on yourself and play your server for a couple hours alone. Dedicate your time to it for a bit. Get a feel for the server. If you're not having fun by yourself then it probably won't be for others
When I play my server I get excited, there's goals, there's achievements, there's quests and events that happen. We have custom mobs that spawn so I'm curious on where they're at. It's very fun to me and the players also stick around. For a long time my server wasn't fun but I thought it was. You really don't know until you consistently play it yourself and try to feel your features. Does it feel unique? Or could I join another server and get the same experience or better
Because if you throw generic plugins like fishing plugins and call it "fun", I'll bet that it isn't because most servers also have custom fishing. So keep in mind your biases and go play other servers too for an hour or so and see if it hooks you with anything. Let it inspire but don't copy directly. You're trying to create an experience
