I built a cabin, it's on my page and I highly recommend using logs as a base, however keep the roof simple since it will eat up your placement limit
If you're trying to place a log vertically, it wont work since placed horizontally and rotated vertically will make it so only half the log is visible.. for this I simply find a cosmetic half the size of a log and place the log on top of it (you could use another log if you want)
But by far the best recommendation is to use crops, for example a huge sunflower so you get the vibe and build from that

If you want to make a slanted roof use the wells, they have a nice slanted angle that you can place floorings on

Use floorings and fences for walls
Use floorings for well, flooring if you really want to or if your building a tree house
Furniture should be obvious
