SOTF CRASHING / DATA LEAK?

My specs are good enough to run the game. But it takes so much memory. It uses 7.1gb when entering a save file. Then gradually raising up until 8gb of memory use and crashes / freezes

How much memory do you have in your system? And how much are you using running other applications? Sons of the forest requires 12gb of ram to run

@JinnKazuyaa what the person above is asking ^
JinnKazuyaa
JinnKazuyaaOP2mo ago
16gb ram atm Nothing else uses too much, discord uses 700mb
haventstoleasoul
If everything else combined is not exceeding 3 gbs or so, then the problem is elsewhere

Yea , i did verify the files integrity Run as admin, compatibility mode windows 8, lowest graphic settings possible in game, but it still happens Most of them just delayed the crash time, and its installed on ssd , not hdd, so im blanking out

Minimum requirements are GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 3GB / AMD Radeon RX 570 CPU: Intel Core i5-8400 / AMD Ryzen 3 3300X RAM: 12GB OS: Windows 10 64-bit Storage: 20GB (SSD recommended) Recommended requirements GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Ti/ AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT CPU: Intel Core i5-8700K / AMD Ryzen 5 3600X RAM: 16GB OS: Windows 10 64-bit Storage: 20GB (SSD recommended) I'm not sure if it's your operating system, running windows 8

Wait ill pullup my specs The problem is my friend has worse laptop and can play well So im puzzled NVIDEA GeForce RTX 3050Ti Laptop GPU 16GB RAM AMD RADEON(TM) Graphics AMD Ryzen 7 5800H They have shittier specs, and it only takes up 800mb of their RAM and mine takes 8Gb in task manager It starts off at 7.100gb≈, and gradually rises every second till 8gb, and crashes Ive never had this problem with any game, and ive run heavier games before
haventstoleasoul
That's strange. Not sure then, sorry.

Alright, appreciate the try man Imma try to install it on an external ssd later

which brings up second question that may be the cause of the issue til i disappeared for an hour, are u playing it on an ssd or nah? game has been known to have issues when not installed on an ssd, its even recommended in the listed specs
haventstoleasoul
The game is installed on their ssd

spidy2mo ago
ah ok, hm wait, their os is windows 8?
haventstoleasoul
Yes, set to windows 8 compatibility mode which I'm not sure if it actually works like that or not
spidy
spidy2mo ago
considering windows 10 is also stated as a min requirement, that should be heavily considered as the issue @JinnKazuyaa
haventstoleasoul
I'd be curious if a simple operating system upgrade works. Everything else is met. I played Ark with 16gb of ram and I think min is 12 and it was fine.

Heyya sorry for the damn late reply i was sleepin too long Im on windows 11 i think? I set it to auto update I put it to run on compatibility mode for windows 8, and run as administrator as per my friends advice https://discord.com/channels/268142459844952064/286082526508744704/1390322624365723748 Also do look here, this is what i mean when it keeps increasing. Imma try redownloading on an external ssd real quick. Yea i read that some people downloading it on hdd is an issue, but mine wasnt Update : redownloaded on an external ssd and same issue. So back to square 1 for me. Game was at lowest graphic settings possible, and vsync off Max fps even limited to 60

How are you only using about 9GB of RAM, but it’s at 90% usage..? Surely that means you can’t have 16GB of ram
sebinator
sebinator2mo ago
Ok super strange. Have you downloaded any FPS booster applications or something similar that’s intended to increase performance? These sometimes clash with certain games - it did for me with BeamNG so might be the same issue idk… Also your laptop is SUPER loud, so could be an overheating issue. No idea though, SOTF isn’t very demanding. I’m able to run it on: Ryzen 5 3600 GTX 1660 Super 16GB RAM No idea what the issue could be if not what I listed above.

Im using nitro5

It’s also possible that you got a faulty CD Key. If you bought it through steam then that won’t be an issue though.

JinnKazuyaaOP2mo ago
I can manually adjust its fan speed I put it on max for high performance games
sebinator
sebinator2mo ago
Okay, that won’t mess with anything Have you downloaded mods for SOTF?
JinnKazuyaa
JinnKazuyaaOP2mo ago
Yea i have a friend with 8gb ram that played it on his laptop, it occupies 800mb of ram only Nope pure vanilla My specs btw

sebinator2mo ago
That’s really confusing. It’s a very low spec game. Are there any issues with the SSD you’re using?
JinnKazuyaa
JinnKazuyaaOP2mo ago
This issue happened with valorant once, but redownloading fixed the issue
sebinator
sebinator2mo ago
Have you tried redownloading?
JinnKazuyaa
JinnKazuyaaOP2mo ago
At first i downloaded on the laptops SSD, i just redownloaded on an external SSD
sebinator
sebinator2mo ago
Okay. Super rare that both SSDs would be faulty.
JinnKazuyaa
JinnKazuyaaOP2mo ago
i dont think my ssd’s are the issue tbh, ive run apex, cs, valorant Ive even run valorant and 2 roblox instances at once ;-; Also i did update my graphics driver yesterday :/
sebinator
sebinator2mo ago
Okay so it could be any of these issues: - Your GPU only has 4GB of VRAM, and SOTF is very VRAM intensive, so lower your graphics settings. - It’s possible that you’re running the game via your integrated graphics, so see if you can force your game to run through the RTX GPU. - Very possible that your drivers are fucked, uninstall and download an older version that you know works. - Your laptop is overheating. This is really all else I can think of bro, test it all out? Sorry if this doesn’t help!

JinnKazuyaaOP2mo ago
I did run it on all low / very low / off I dont know what VRAM is, im not an expert at computers / laptops How do i run it via RTX GPU? It was on an older version previously, i updated the drivers after crashing a lot and it still persists with the same shi And its not overheating, my airconditioning is at 18C, my room is freezing
sebinator
sebinator2mo ago
VRAM is video-memory. It’s required to run games and display the picture. Some games require more VRAM than others. SOTF requires quite a bit, potentially more than your GPU offers. My GPU for example has 8GB of VRAM, and so I can run most games very well. Haha not your room! The internals of the Laptop! Download a temperature regulator and check your temps. Super important to keep them low
JinnKazuyaa
JinnKazuyaaOP2mo ago
Yeaa ik what u meant, but its not overheating. I just changed the laptops fans earlier this year Cpu temp at 62C, Gpu at 41C
sebinator
sebinator2mo ago
Need to go into your settings. I’m not 100% sure as I’m on PC, not a laptop and I don’t have integrated graphics, so it was never an issue for me. I always just plugged into the GPU instead of my MOBO That’s perfectly fine, not an overheating issue
JinnKazuyaa
JinnKazuyaaOP2mo ago
Should optimizations for windowed games be on or off? In settings Gpu preferance just set to high performance
sebinator
sebinator2mo ago
Honestly, no idea. Optimizing a PC or Laptop via the windows settings normally doesn’t change much. I’ve done so much to my PC to optimise it and only get maybe 7-8FPS more, so really not an issue. The only other thing I could recommend is trying to run the game on someone else’s PC through your steam account. Or getting yourself a PC. Diagnosing issues on a laptop is always much harder as the GPU is always worse and RAM is always a lower quality. This is a very strange issue bro

JinnKazuyaaOP2mo ago
Does it usually use 8gb+ of memory? My friend who has a midranged + pc only used 4.2gb of memory Ill ask him later to run it using my acc
sebinator
sebinator2mo ago
It shouldn’t. And the RAM usage increasing so quickly is definitely not normal. It’s very possible that your RAM is dying or that it isn’t transferring the data quick enough
JinnKazuyaa
JinnKazuyaaOP2mo ago
Its maintaining 8.5gb of memory atm, 91% gpu
sebinator
sebinator2mo ago
And the game is running ok?
JinnKazuyaa
JinnKazuyaaOP2mo ago
For now ig?
sebinator
sebinator2mo ago
Weird. Your RAM usage shouldn’t be that high, yet it is likely poor quality being a laptop build. I’m sorry to say, but it might not be possible to run SOTF consistently. Are your other games still working okay today?
JinnKazuyaa
JinnKazuyaaOP2mo ago
Nvm the memory and gpu is still spiking Ive googled it and i think its called data / memory leak? Hence the post title Im scared to even run discord rn tbf
sebinator
sebinator2mo ago
You might be in a situation where your laptop will become unusable if that’s the case. Might be time to replace the RAM or get a new laptop/PC… I’d recommend selling the laptop and getting a low/mid range PC. Mine only costed me £300 and can run most modern games in 1080p
JinnKazuyaa
JinnKazuyaaOP2mo ago
I set the graphics setting in the settings before running the game at low but it auto went to ultra again after in game, just noticed And lowered everything again 7.5gb memory (maintaining) 51-52% gpu (maintaining)
sebinator
sebinator2mo ago
That’s far better! Hope it works continuously!
JinnKazuyaa
JinnKazuyaaOP2mo ago
Im still weirded out about the memory tho Thats absurdly high Ill let it run for another 10-20 mins, then test it out + discord and see if it crashes
sebinator
sebinator2mo ago
Yeah, it shouldn’t be that high. It is very possible that your RAM is low quality and therefore needs to use more to meet the megatransfers required for the game. It shouldn’t be a huge issue, but if the crashing persists, definitely ask Reddit.
