How to Measure Clothes?
Hi all, pretty new to buying clothes for myself with any sort of intention. This jacket recently caught my eye, but I wanted to make sure the size was right.

To my understanding, chest is the circumference under my armpits, sleeve length is the length from the top of where the sleeve sits on the shoulder to the cuff, and shoulder width is the distance between the 2 shoulder seams, but I'm seeing conflicting information online and wanted to make sure.

That diagram clears it up nicely, thanks!!
Since I'm not terribly flexible, would the best way to measure shoulder without help be to check a jacket that I already like the fit of?
Yes
oh hey yeah
this is assuming you’re measuring the clothes
100%
ooh, gotcha
are measurements different if you're doing it on a person?
generally the size charts on sites are for the measurements of the garment
it’s a little different but you’re looking for all the same measurements, though it’s more used when ordering custom, made to measure or made to order clothing
ok, that makes sense
Yes, because otherwise it would be skin-tight. If your chest is 38", a jacket might be 40", and even more for an overcoat.
