Looking for suit and sport coat purchasing advice

I've gone way too long with a really uninspired wardrobe when it comes to the above-titled items. I typically don't have a huge need for them (I hold an office job where slacks/khakis + button down short/polo is all I need), but I often find myself wishing I had something just a little better whenever the occasional formal event arises (wedding, funeral, customer meeting at work. work interview, etc.)

Currently, I've got zero sport coats and only two suits to my name - a light grey Jos a Bank suit and a navy blue Combatant Gentlemen suit. Both suits are nearing a decade old, but thankfully still fit me pretty well.

As for my build, I'm tall and very slim/lanky. 6'3", fairly broad-shouldered, but only 170 lbs. I need to get formal measurements done wherever I go, but rough guesses are 16" neck, 38" chest, 33" waist (not sure on sleeve length).

What I'm on the hunt for:
  • One good quality suit. Maybe in charcoal grey? I'm light-haired and light-complexion, and black feels harsh. But I ideally need something that can still be used when I have to go to something more somber like a funeral
  • One sport coat. Maybe in navy? I'd want a color that can be paired with tan/khaki pants among other things
For budget, I'm not trying to break the bank. If I start out with getting one suit and one sport coat, I'd ideally like to stay under $1,000 all-in (after tailoring, etc.), if possible.

I'm in the US. I'm open to buying online, but only after I can get myself fully measured. I feel like it might be helpful for me to try some stuff on in person, though.

Any brand recommendations that work well with my body type and budget? Spier & Mackay and SuitSupply are two that I've seen recommended, so I was considering starting there. But I wanted to get people's thoughts. I'm also open to suggestions on what color/materials I should be focusing on to best round out what I already have and work for some of the formal events I mentioned above. Any insight is appreciated!
