Duplicate photos showing up on iOS

Hi. There’s duplicates of photos showing up on the iOS app. For eg, if a photo has been uploaded, two versions show up side by side. The version on ente servers, and another local copy with a struck through cloud icon on the bottom left. Is this known and expected behaviour? Am I doing something wrong? Attaching an example. cc: @vishnu

Ente automatically deduplicates files during uploads. When uploading, Ente will ignore exact duplicate files, allowing you to resume interrupted uploads or reinstall the app, and Ente will automatically skip duplicates and only add new files. The duplicate detection works slightly differently on each platform to cater to the platform's nuances, as mentioned at https://help.ente.io/photos/features/deduplicate#during-uploads. On iOS, Ente uses a hash to detect exact duplicates. If the duplicate is being uploaded to an album where a photo with the same hash already exists, the duplicate will be skipped. If it is being uploaded to a different album, then a symlink will be created, so no actual data will need to be uploaded, just a symlink will be created to the existing file, as explained at https://help.ente.io/photos/features/deduplicate#mobile. If you create a new album on your device after the initial backup, the photos in that album may have already been uploaded to another album in Ente. To fix this, go to the "On Device" album in Ente, select all photos, and manually add them to the corresponding album in Ente, as mentioned at https://help.ente.io/photos/faq/general#why-dont-all-photos-from-a-new-ios-album-appear-in-the-corresponding-ente-album. -# If your issue is resolved, please use the /solved command to close this thread.

These are perfect duplicates, no similar photos. And there is only once copy in my local library.

Could you confirm if all of these were uploaded from the same device?

Yep. They were.

This seems to have started happening recently for some users since we rolled out background upload. Although, we haven’t been able to easily reproduce this issue, but we have a potential fix for this. Please ignore this till next update. Apart from two entries on Home Screen, it shouldn’t have any side effect.

I also experience this randomly on Android - not frequently though. I'm not sure if it's related to sync settings or no wifi/data available. I'm not seeing any consistency for why it happens when it happens. The duplicates do disappear eventually but I'm not clear why.
