Should my iOS backup be taking months?

I am using foreground upload every night, but my iCloud Photo Library is about 20,000 photos. Each night the number of remaining photos/videos decreases / but after months of doing it most nights there are still over 6,000 remaining. Internet or connection speed aren’t the problem. It seems iCloud download is often stuck on 1%. I’m not against using some sort of other backup for my iCloud Photos that could be better.

We are currently trying to fix exactly this with the new beta timeline that was released in the last version, that should perform significantly better if you allow it to queue all of the uploads before you leave the app Also make sure you aren't force killing the app as that will terminate all background tasks

Great - I leave the app open in the foreground all night, so it should have plenty of time to queue everything? Do I need to opt-in to the beta? Ignore that - just opted in to Beta on my app
Zack
Zack4mo ago
It'l tell you the progress of the queueing from the backup screen
coysh.
coysh.OP4mo ago
Great - hopefully that'll start soon. It's currently hasing assets - which seems to potentially be stuck at 37,999 hashed assets - guessing backup will start when thats done?
Zack
Zack4mo ago
The hashing assets step can take a while as it has to download all the iCloud assets before it can hash them
coysh.
coysh.OP4mo ago
Cheers mate. Really helpful. Will that run in the background? Or is it quicker in foreground?
Zack
Zack4mo ago
It'll be quicker in the foreground, but once the queueing is done those tasks should run in the background too But we are at the mercy of the iOS scheduling to decide exactly how many uploads run and when. If the device is plugged in and on Wi-Fi it should give us plenty of time for uploading things, in theory

@Zack - the hashed assets finished - but it's genuinely crashed my iPhone and I've got a spinning wheel now. Looks like it was taking up about 50% of my iPhone storage space. Is this a known issue?
Zack
Zack4mo ago
If you have a lot of iCloud assets, it can take up quite a bit of space, we are working on implementing a proper cleanup for the next release
coysh.
coysh.OP4mo ago
Yeah understandable. The crashing thing is odd though - didn't think an app could do that
Zack
Zack4mo ago
As in it actually crashed the entire phone and it rebooted?

As in it's actually crashed the entire phone and I'm struggling to turn it back on! (iPhone 12 Pro - 128GB)

0.o We aren't doing anything crazy here, everything we do is utilising the built-in iOS methods So the fact it's done that is wild

coysh.OP4mo ago
Yeah battery was at 100% as well, but it's pretty warm Yeah never had this before
Zack
Zack4mo ago
I hope you manage to get it turned back on 😅 The hashing part can make the phone quite warm

Got an Apple logo - so a good sign. Might leave this backup until the next version.

Maybe, though I don't think the storage usage will really make much difference here, no idea what would cause the phone to force shutoff like that Unless it was a thermal shutoff, but that seems unlikely, or at least, shouldn't be something that can happen from us just hashing assets

Back on - but getting an SqlliteException: while selecting from statement, disk I/O error (code 4618) - Causing statement: PRAGMA user_version - seems like this: https://github.com/immich-app/immich/issues/20268

If I delete the app and reinstall to regain space - guessing it'll rehash the assets again and I'll be back in the same situation?
Zack
Zack4mo ago
Has the app consumed all available disk space on the device?
coysh.
coysh.OP4mo ago
It's actually saying 124.83GB of 128 GB used - so close but not everything. Interestingly force closing and opening the app and it's working - but it's hashing the last 1,000 assets again (41,685 out of 42,929)
Zack
Zack4mo ago
Yea... I would say with that many iCloud assets it's probably worth waiting until the next version when we hopefully have a better solution for the iCloud problem Apologies The beta is in general much better but also has some issues like this still 😅
coysh.
coysh.OP4mo ago
Yeah I can tell it's much better! It's crashed the phone again 😅 so might turn off the beta
Zack
Zack4mo ago
That's quite concerning... I do wonder if it has something to do with the storage getting full though actually Maybe it's causing system services to be starved of disk space What iOS version are you on out of interest?
coysh.
coysh.OP4mo ago
18.5
Zack
Zack4mo ago
Once the next version is released, maybe you can try it again and see if that works better for you and the phone doesn't crash 😅 If you could let us know that'd be great
coysh.

Weirdly turning off beta backup now is saying "Permissionn denied" forphotos But isn’t requesting permission
Zack
Zack4mo ago
I would probably recommend wiping the app storage as otherwise I think those downloaded iCloud assets will persist
