Can I install Bazzite on my PC?

Hi, I'm completely new to Linux and is trying to understand all the terms in the installation guide. I managed to get Bazzite iso on a USB and booted into it, when I did the "check media and install" it gave me a "not recommended " Is it even possible to get Bazzite on my PC? If not, are there any other distros I can look into using instead? Ask me about any relevant hardware specs! Thanks ❤️

Solution:
Yeah, it's fine. The check media is broken, go to the installer. 8gb system memory is low. Which gpu do you have?

Hmm, you could install Bazzite, but GPU drivers might be a little problematic.

Open the side panel and you should see at least 2, if not 4 slots for RAM. Buy some DDR3 Non-ECC RAM on EBay, and get an easy upgrade to at least 16Gb for cheap

I’m almost 100% certain there’s a guide on how to open that

You'll want to see if there is a bios update too. Good chance there has been one since 2015 😄

might go for it if Bazzite works, I have stuttering issues and thinking it might be windows fault

Your stuttering issue might just be old hardware tbh

Linux is my last attempt at breathing life into it before it goes to the junkyard 😛

Oh! It has Laptop memory in it! That makes this pretty stupid easy lol And you can replace the GPU too Something like a 2 slot RX6600XT would be a solid upgrade. You probably could even upgrade the CPU to an i7-4790 (Non-K) This thing has some actual upgrade potential, you just have to put in the work.

That's a lot more than I expected! Nice!

With a newer AMD GPU, and replacing the DDR3 SO-DIMMS to 16GB, you could easily make this last a few more years. Does it have an SSD?

only a 128gb one

Skiptrace2mo ago
Oh, yikes. I’d buy a larger capacity SSD too.

What would be the main cause of stuttering? It happens in chrome while browsing, in games and everywhere else, can't really find a cause for it other than computer=bad

My order of priority to upgrade this thing would be. 1. Upgrade RAM: https://ebay.us/m/unfFDd This would be stellar. 2. Upgrade GPU: https://ebay.us/m/P5MaOx if a GTX 980 can run in there, this definitely can run. 3. Upgrade SSD: I would at least get a 2TB SSD.

The main culprit is 8GB of RAM That’s just not enough in 2025

You might also need a Dual 6 Pin to Single 8 Pin PCIe Power adapter depending on if your 980 is powered from a single 8 pin, or dual 6 pin.

currently installing bazzite, will see if I like it and if it keeps stuttering.

But, the primary thing is to make sure that the card you end up buying is at least the same dimensions or smaller than the 980 you have now.

As Biebel said, that’s a Secure Boot issue. If you want to turn on Secure Boot later, you can using the instructions listed there.

If it's still stuck there can you drop to a tty and post what you get from rpm-ostree status

tty is a console that's independent from your graphical environment you can open one with ctrl-alt-F3

biebel

You'll have to rebase brh rebase bazzite-nvidia:stable is the command I think 980 only works with the non open one
Albert / Treeblast
Albert / TreeblastOP2mo ago
Ill try that, thanks Another question, I picked the delete all option when picking what hard drives to install Bazzite on, assuming it would format the drives and remove Windows and everything else, but the old data seems to still be on there. Will that process happen later in the Bazzite install process or did I do something wrong?
biebel
biebel2mo ago
Something went wrong if it's still there, but this can be fixed after.
