Cropped jacket with contrasting oversized T-shirt underneath?
what's the consensus on layering like this?
not sure how I feel about it, but I'm willing to give this person the benefit of the doubt since it's clearly intentional, they work as a stylist, and most of their other fits are solid. I think the darker tee and lighter jacket look fine, but white between two darker colors just feels off.
does this look bad to me because I'm too locked into outdated, rule-based mfa thinking, or does it actually look kind of bad?

Hi @interpassivity! For better answers, include:
- Reference pictures
- Budget in numbers
- Specific measurements
- Openness to buying secondhand and/or online
- Location: country/continent is fine
- Timing/urgency
I think the green jacket fit looks bad and the white jacket fit is fine
(I think the clothes he's wearing in the white jacket fit aren't great but PROPORTIONALLY it's fine)
i don’t think i would trust this person as a stylist
bro works at a nordstrom in dallas, the 'personal stylist' term is being used extremely liberally here lmao
Im going to agree with this. The second fit is okay but I wouldn’t call either one good.
The “T-shirt longer than jacket” thing is sth that’s not super easy to pull off without it looking unintentional - the first fit fails at that while the second one does make it look somewhat intentional and thus better.
I’m also going to say I like neither tbh - I’m sure someone here pulled a look like that off much better
what else about the first look causes it to fail? is it just the contrast?
here's another where he has a light shirt under a dark jacket that I'd say works slightly better, maybe because there is a tonal element and the pants have more going on, but I'm still not entirely sure why

his shirt is like 2-3 inches too long to the point that it no longer looks like a deliberate style choice it just looks like his shirt is too big
this one looks fine
honestly there's not like a rule to where the shirt should fall relative to the jacket it's kinda just one of those things where you look at it and decide if it looks good or not
this personal stylist would be best of r/mfa 2013 for sure.
here are some people doing a good job at visible longer bottom layer

it definitely helps when the rest of the outfit has more going on in terms of shape and texture
can it still work with an open jacket and basic tee though?
send me your inspo album i need to know
none of these are in my inspo theyre all amazing and from highlights
tru
@artvandelayimporting @carrion
trying to come up with the most basic example of a short jacket and high contrast tee underneath, I don't really have any that are properly long though

This looks good
I mean sure. It's just not a super on trend thing rn and the fits from the stylist u posted are total bricks imo.
A cropped jacket and a regular shirt would be stronger for smth extremely basic
yeah the jacket u have is actually cropped which is the difference
@carrion @artvandelayimporting does it look better than with a cropped tee underneath though?

Honestly no
Oh wait yea
First one better imo
i fear that tee is not cropped
it is just a tee
I just mean matching the hem of the jacket as opposed to longer
honestly this comparison is too granular for me
i have no strong opinion on either
ok, here it with more of a properly cropped tee
I tend to think either slightly longer or slightly shorter than the jacket works better while the same length is kind of boring

I like watching the nordstrom stylist videos but they're not always the best dressed. also idk if he planned the outfit for the video, its possible he just wore that to work that day out of laziness bc full line Nordstrom has dress code stuff abt wearing a t-shirt and sneakers without a third piece
(admittedly idk how strict the managers are abt it bc i work at the rack but any time they give us dress code stuff i feel thankful that I don't need to worry abt those things)
both this and the first example posted look good to me (https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1402299336993280191/1402311898635960491)
i think the olive jacket fit in op looks bad because the jacket itself isn't great - partly vibes, partly personal taste, partly because it does not look like it hangs well imo
