Migration Confusion & Support

Hey team: I’d set up ente for my partner on android, and locally deleted a bunch of large files. We then migrated his data to iOS, but the Move to iOS app messed up the photo folders (and Ente handles folders in a seemingly intuitive way - perhaps because of how iOS organises folders - I HATE the be gallery app on iOS but oh well). So I don’t know what folders to select. I also don’t know if ente will detect that a particular photo has already been backed up? So how does that detection work? Is there a photo associated uuid? Do you look for identical metadata? I know you have duplicate deletion support - but what if the metadata is not identical? Will you delete even then, and which one will you pick?

Ente can detect previously backed up photos during migration. During uploads, Ente will ignore exact duplicate files. This allows you to resume interrupted uploads, or drag and drop the same folder, or reinstall the app, and expect Ente to automatically skip duplicates and only add new files. The duplicate detection works slightly differently on each platform, to cater to the platform's nuances, as explained at https://help.ente.io/photos/features/deduplicate#during-uploads. On iOS, a hash is used to detect exact duplicates. If the duplicate is being uploaded to an album where a photo with the same hash already exists, then the duplicate will be skipped. If it is being uploaded to a different album, then a symlink will be created, so no actual data will need to be uploaded, just a symlink will be created to the existing file. More details are available at https://help.ente.io/photos/features/deduplicate#mobile. Ente imports the date for your photos from the EXIF data, metadata JSON, and filename, as described at https://help.ente.io/photos/faq/metadata#import. -# If your issue is resolved, feel free to use the /solved command to close this thread. As the bot said, it’s currently just exactly identical files, but similar photos with different metadata is in the works https://discord.com/channels/948937918347608085/948937919027105865/1401262140345815152
