It really all depends on how you play. T-rex is cool if you wanna do a lot of harvesting somewhat lower value fruits or if you want to stack your entire garden with a ton of mutations. Afk for a while with trex and your entire garden will have a ton of mutations.
Butterfly is really good if you enjoy trying to grow insane priced fruit. With the butterfly you can focus entirely on growing the biggest fruit possible, then use a few mutation sprays, sprinklers or mutation pets and basically instantly turn in rainbow and start stacking mutations.
Also keep in mind rainbow is a variant and not a mutation, T-rex can not do anything about gold or rainbow. Without rainbow the highest multiplier you can get is 1342 and to be more reasonable your most likely going to struggle getting around a 600 multiplier. Once you add rainbow to the mix you can get as high as 67,100 multiplier. Of course you can get rainbow without butterfly and with the infinite sprinkler glitch it was easier cuz you could keep shoveling any fruit that wasnt rainbow until you got one to grow. For sure the easiest way to grow the biggest and most expensive fruit is to just worry about growing massive fruit and then using a butterfly to make it rainbow and start stacking mutations.
All that to say these are 2 entirely different pets that can complement each other great but if your going to choose just 1 or the other it all comes down to how you enjoy playing the game and imo the value is about the same, Trex is newer and i would usually favor the newer pet as more valuable if the pets are similiar. But also the dinosaur egg has been the easiest egg to ever get in this game so far. Is still in the game currently ( so is anti bee egg technically but you would have to get it from the traveling honey merchant, then craft it). Using alts you can easily farm 100 dinosaur eggs per day

If your giving t Rex for butterfly its a L t rex can do more then 1 fruit at a time to mutate it can do it with any mutation too. butterfly can only turn 1 fruit rainbow but the fruit has to have 5 mutations on it and butterfly removes all mutations and puts rainbow
