World file and backups are missing, onedrive is disabled
My world file did not save last night when I stopped playing, onedrive cannot be the cause of this as I disabled it a long time ago. I used TEdit for the first time last night though, so it could be microsoft defender causing the issue? I have only a small number of quality of life mods enabled.

If your world or player is failing to load, you can use the backups to roll back to an earlier working file. See https://github.com/tModLoader/tModLoader/wiki/Basic-tModLoader-Usage-Guide#world-and-player-backups for more information.
I cannot find any working backups
Check for a backup
I did
the backup folder for the world is an empty zip
there are versions of the world file in my recycle bin but if I attempt to put them back something immediately deletes them when I try to load the world and they go straight back to the recycle bin
What's the file extension on the one for the recycling bin
Should be wld and/or twld.
If it's .bad it is corrupt
its a .wld
with a .wld.back and a .twld.bak versions of it there as well
if I attempt to restore it and load the world, the load fails and it is put back into the recycle bin
Try the bak ones by renaming it to remove the .bak

Follow the instructions here to disable controlled folder access or to add an exception for tModLoader:

Try this too ^
there is a .bad file in the worlds folder?
I dont think that was there until a few minutes ago
sorry, how do I do that if the error doesnt pop up?
okay I just had controlled folder access entirely turned off already anyways
cannot be that
if I replace the .wld with a .bak the world doesnt even have a name in the menu screen and it does not load
if I try to open the world file in TEdit that saved when I closed the game last night it gives me an actually useful error message, which is that the world file is empty and all bytes are zeros
literally why did this happen oh my god
okay I got a version of the world to load and its only like, four hours behind
but I really want to know what on earth happened
so I dont lose hours of progress on my challenge run again
