The standard, the minimum

Hi everyone. So i was wondering, i'm about to create a website for my buddy, who is starting his own business. What would you guys consider the standard or the bare minimum of a website? I'm currently considering doing it in wordpress(if he decides to do marketing with fb pixel, ga etc.), but as of now he has no interest in anything but a plain "profile" website. This is only because i am not proficient with cookies and wordpress will allow me to do all that jazz in plugins. Anyways, since he currently has no interest in this, i am leaning towards a complete vanilla solution. HTML, CSS, JS. What do you guys think? Is this enough to be considered reaching the expected standard?

that's so heavily dependent on physical location, type of business, and the local competition that it's practically impossible to answer here, I'd expect a car mechanic to have opening times and a phone number, but a photographer would need a portfolio at least, where a small store should have maybe a few brand pages for their main stock items, and larger stores should have full listings if not the option to order online or at least see stock levels in somewhat-realtime

if it is just a "profile" website, you could get away with just a simple vanilla site. I think more important is a good search engine listing. Make sure he has a business profile on at least google and bing

You're right. It was a very broad and generalized question. To be honest he doesn't really care one way or another - it's more me that is wondering this. My true motivation for asking is that i am currently unemployed and would like to not be viewed as a complete amateur when/if a possible future employer were to look at my work. I can make a banger looking website with organized code. He's going into the home business at a very chaotic time. Being a smaller contractor. So he has no need for online shops, listings or even extensive portfolios. He will have examples of his work already on the site. I agree with your second message as well. Funny that you say "get away with" because that is exactly what i was thinking. Can i get away with this and not be looked down upon by my peers. I think you're right tho, to him and his customers the more important thing is making sure he present and has presence on google and bing.

Being efficient for an employer is important as well. You can build the most extensive website that can you can think of, but is it worth the time?

Yes you're absolutely right. There a severals factors to consider. I think i'll just enjoy making this website for my buddy vanilla style(i enjoy that way more than any CMS or framework). I can make CMS based solutions on future projects.

if you are going to have multiple pages, at least use a static site generator like astro or hugo or jeckill
