How can I make my outfit look more like Jason Jules's?

So basically I tried to copy this outfit, obviously trying to look as cool and laid back yet sophisticated as JJ is a fool's errand. But I'm still interested in trying to work out what makes his fit look amazing and mine nice-enough-but-meh. Even though, to an untrained eye at least, we are wearing a similar combination of items, including colours/fits etc. A few things I can see: 1. His sports coat has a more distinct pattern, which makes it more eye-catching in a casual-but-laid-back fit. 2. His trousers are shorter which again adds to the casualness (mine haven't been hemmed yet and don't fit). 3. His mid-section is more proportionally broken up by his trousers, belt and jacket. My trousers are fairly high-rise but his are higher, perhaps he just has a higher leg/torso ratio and that's always going to look better proportioned in this kind of fit. Anyway, posting this because I'm interested in other people's opinions on what he's getting right and I'm getting wrong here.

Hi @RedWhisky! For better answers, include: - Reference pictures - Budget in numbers - Specific measurements - Openness to buying secondhand and/or online - Location: country/continent is fine - Timing/urgency

Nice photography is probably playing a role here too I think just hemming the pants would do a lot to improve this

I think the tones in his pieces add a lot too — more visible colour texture in the pants, more of an off-white shirt and an earthier blazer. Some of that’s photography tho as said. Also think the pants and shirt read a bit looser around the mid section. Makes it feel a bit more casual. Some of that’s also posing.

Yeah I think his look is very tonal, so its a lot of different shades of brown, even the white is leaning towards beige

Agree w 2, for 1 im not sure if its the pattern, as much as your jacket blends in w the shirt. Theres less visual distonction btwn the white and light grey (?) Vs. The cream and beige

Also looser scarf

looser everything tbh except maybe the jacket* that seems to be similar enough in fit but your shirt is tucked tight, the belt looks like it's applying visible pressure to the midsection, making an overall less relaxed look his hands also in his pants pocket vs yours in the jacket pocket but that's p much what others said re: photo quality

Yeah definitely, my jacket looks light grey in these pics but its actually much closer to the earthy colour of his in reality. Yeah, agreed—I've lost a stone in weight recently but I'm still not trim enough for modelling, I don't think, so he's got a definite advantage here. Are you sure? I actually put my hand in my trouser pocket for this pic at first, then re-took it because it looks to me like his hand is in his jacket. You are probably right though.

it has nothing to do with your body and everything to do with the cut of your clothes.

that's related to the cut of the clothes not your body specifically

- hem pants - better lighting - your color scheme is a little more staid/safe vs his being more tonal / casual - more relaxed pose wouldn’t hurt but isn’t necessary - looser scarf - looser fitting polo also yeah your body isn’t bad your polo is just tighter than his plenty of much bigger people than you are models don’t say stupid shit

i think you're the same or comparable height going off where the buttoning point and edge of the jacket lay (though it's hard to say); a looser polo would achieve a similar visual effect also everything kyn said

Definitely, looking at the pics again I can see his polo is cut looser than mine. I think mine might be a slim fit, it's one I've had for years and never really worn because it doesn't seem to fit great.

literally the same polo a size or two up could work the amount of times i’ve ordered clothes in 2 sizes and both “fit” but one fit “better” is too many to count (+ i generally know the measurements of the garments i want before i order them at this point) overstepping the bounds of this question but you might do yourself a favor by getting rid of the clothes that don’t fit the way you want them to every couple years i try on every single piece of clothing i have to determine whether i want to keep it, but also on an ongoing basis if i try something on and the fit doesn’t work enough times i just put it in the donate pile not worth taking psychic damage it’s just cotton and stuff

Good idea, I try to sell or give away what I don't wear. But the problem I have is that my weight fluctuates and I'm always worried I'll regret not having something if I size back into it. One of my favorite items is a pair of jeans I've had about 10 years but haven't been able to wear for the last 3-4 years, I tried them on a few days ago and they fit great again! i do try to alter stuff to fit me where possible too. I'm a 32 waist now, while I've been a 34 for years, so I have about five pairs of pants with my tailor at the moment getting the waist reduced. Not sure he will be able to make a polo fit looser on me though.

imo unless the fluctuations in weight are regular and consistent (in which case i'd probably just get two sets of clothes) i'd still take the tack of getting rid of what doesn't fit how you want altering stuff can help for things you truly like but imo you've gotta dress for the body you have and the live you live currently

It's more like if I'm in a period of my life when I'm eating properly and going to the gym, I'm a 32 waist, and when I take a few weeks off it goes to 34. good advice though.

Just rock the 34s with a belt.

unless the jeans are really special yeet them gf and i have gotten rid of so many clothes and maybe only each think about 1-2 pieces each, all of which still wouldn’t fit right today

can count the number of things i donated/sold and subsequently miss on one hand between secondhand stores and the internet the vast majority of things i got rid of, i have been able to find again

Tried this plenty of times but often doesn't work, particularly with trousers designed to sit higher up. I do sell and donate a lot. But a big part of my mission to improve my wardrobe was cutting down on the amount of stuff I buy. So where I have jeans and trousers I've spent a fair whack on, I do prefer to try to keep wearing them.
