Casual/relaxed/"workwear" suit

Thinking of getting a suit in this vein: loose-ish casual cut, no structure, more durable/"workwear"-y material (so probably cotton but open to cotton blends, NOT wool), ideally something on the border of being a "set-up" rather than a traditional suit. Probably a pretty boring color (navy, olive). Budget up to like the 7-800 dollar range, maybe up to 1000? Open to used but I feel like this sort of thing is pretty hard to find secondhand. Points of reference and options I've thought about: - Vintage Brooks Brothers wash n wear. A little bit too trad in cut / details, would like something slightly goofier. - Buck Mason Capitola. Also just sliiiightly on the too formal/trad in cut, looking for something slightly funkier - Drake's Games Suit. Still slightly too dressy, also costs 1 billion dollars. - Engineered Garments. Obvious choice, right amount of weird, but none of their jackets quite hit right. - Canoe Club x Beams Plus. Pretty neat, but sold out, material seems kind of weird. - I know some of my inspo pics are from Lemaire; Sillage; Kaptain Sunshine, no need to tell me those brands. All either too expensive or I can't find a suit from on sale rn or both. Inspo pics attached, curious for any suggestions of other brands or places to look. Also I'm gonna be in NYC this weekend so anything I could try on / buy in a store there is a plus.

Also Lemaire might be slightly to weird / designer-y for this actually now that I think about it? Just triangulating, something halfway between Lemaire and the more trad-y options would be perfect Wouldn't be my first choice but I'm open to it if tarrifs don't jack the price too high

The painter is too casually, definitely want something with lapels as opposed to the more chore vibe of that. Just a little more freaked / loose in the rest of the cut if that makes sense. I like some of their other jackets!

feel like a lot of JP brands have made the type of thing you’re looking for, might be worth scrolling a few stockists to see if anything catches your eye Like Blue Button Shop or similar local equivalent

Yeah I've thought the same. I feel like Beams must have made something like this for a reasonable price.

Belafonte do a bunch of variants on this too in different fabrics/dyes - not sure if they are possibly too workwear/repro for what you want but I think they're cool https://wardrobe19.com/collections/belafonte-ragtime-clothing/products/belafonte-ragtime-clothing-hiback-trouser-salt-pepper-overdyed

They also have matching pants, I believe. The cut probably isn't in line with what you are looking for, though. I didn't love it when I tried it on. But I am looking for something similar to you, so my q&a thread might be of interest to you: https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1386712607720865845 Have you looked at Universal Works?
jplicks
jplicksOP2w ago
I've been skeptical of Universal Works b/c I used to have a jacket from them that I didn't like and sold, but it was a very different type of piece (outerwear) so maybe I'll have a look...
jfarrell468
jfarrell4682w ago
Yeah, I've never owned any Universal Works, but it was a recommendation from my thread that seemed consistent with "casual / workwear / suit". I also just noticed that Zeo had recommended the de Bonne Facture Painter's jacket and pants: https://debonnefacture.fr/products/painters-jacket-belgian-linen-cloth-arabica-ss25
De Bonne Facture
Painter's Jacket
Our painter's jacket is a mix of a jacket and a shirt, and is inspired by the functionality of artists' work garments, with its two large patched pockets.
