Creating a manual system snapshot with Btrfs Assistant

I understand that a manual snapshot of the system configuration can be made in addition to the automatic snapshots that are created when system updates are applied..?
When you create a config in the Snapper Settings, it asks for the backup path. You cannot freely choose a path, presumably because you can only make snapshots of subvolumes..?
Then again, when I choose for instance
/etc
/etc
from the drop-down list, it informs me that it is not a subvolume.
What would I choose if I'm about to make changes to the system (such as sound setup)? There is no
