Downloading DH
Hi, im new to the whole modding minecraft thing and I wanted to ask a stupid question because I have doubts; which file am I supposed to download for MC 1.21.8? I saw that Im supposed to go in the announcements channel, but there s several files and Im not sure which one Im supposed to click on. Sorry if this sounds silly

you can find almost all minecraft mods on https://modrinth.com/mods.
if a mod is not there, try https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft
usually modrinth is the better place to go
oh okay thank you! can I ask you another question real quick?
sure
so if I use the Photon shaders, and now Im done installing DH, which version do I have to choose?

you used the iris installer?
yes
that thing makes a mess of everything imo. makes all of it quite confusing.
wdym? I cant use both Iris and have DH?
i recommend sticking to the fabric install, and removing the iris one
you can
so if I use fabric loader, will my Photon shaders work?
fabric is a mod loader. iris, sodium and DH are mods. you can use the fabric install, and add iris, sodium and DH to them.
the iris installer makes a fabric install and adds iris and sodium. the problem is that it does this in different folders than usual, meaning to add other mods, you now have to find where you need to add them.
go to installations, hover over the fabric one, click on the folder. file exporer should now open.
go to the "mods" folder.
go to modrinth and download: sodium, iris, DH, fabric api.
add these to the mods folder.
launch the fabric install
and if I do not plan on adding other mods?
you plan on adding DH, no?
I already did
okay im a bit lost on what you have and have not done

yea sorry if Im not clear, Im a bit confused too
there is also an easier solution. using the modrinth launcher. which makes managing installs and mods way easier. i would recommend switching to that instead of trying to clean up this mess. would you like help with that or help with cleaning this up?
well, why do I have to clean this up? Im not sure if I understand
because the iris installer messed everything up
how?
it made a new instance that places mods and other files in different directories. for example, you now have two mods folders. where is the other one? i have no idea
I clicked on the modrinth link you sent me, downloaded DH for MC 1.21.8, put it in my mod folder and that s all I did
yes that is indeed the correct way to download mods
not using the iris installer
oh so everything is fine?
well no
the iris installer messed everything up
which is why i recommend abandoning this and using the modrinth launcher instead
its a better launcher anyway
Im so lost ;-;
thats fair
just download the modrinth launcher from here
https://modrinth.com/app
Modrinth
Download Modrinth App!
Modrinth App is a unique, open source launcher that allows you to play your favorite mods, and keep them up to date, all in one neat little package.
I just used modrinth, havent touched Iris, and I wanted to launch the game but I didnt knew which version to use
you did touch the iris installer though... which is where it all went wrong
when did I touched it?
that s what Im not sure to understand
here
well, I think I misread your question lol
that s my bad
well its clear you did, as you have an iris install here
that only happens if you used the iris installer
oh
oh okay
yeah then I did that a while ago
so you recon I should download modrinth ?
imo that will be way easier yes
okay let s start with this then
is there a specific folder a should put it in or is this good? just wanna make sure I aint doing nothing wrong

default is fine
done
alright, launch it and log into your microsoft account
done
click the + button on the bottom left to make a new instance
choose 1.21.8 and fabric

yep there
it s downloading MC
good
here is a more general modrinth app tutorial btw:

okay it s done

install content
add the iris, sodium, DH and fabric api mods
and what do I have to install?
and what about Photon?
that too
even tho I already have it installed?
which will be found under shaders
this is completely seperate from the normal minecraft launcher
so yes
even though you already have it

looks good
photon added too?
oops
forgor photon

you should be good to play now
aight let s try
everything seems fine, I ll try to start up my game
i thought you already did lol
had to go through the settings haha
how do I make sure it loaded enough chunks?
world generation takes a long time. so just go afk and come back later
but, am I not supposed to have stuttering or some lagging?
because I have none
try turning up cpu load in DH's settings. youll get it then probably
already did it, it s on max
good computer i guess
mhhh, weird
isnt it better if I go on creative mode and start exploring to help generating? or is it useless
useless
!slowgen
World generation in general is quite slow and world gen mods can slow it down even more. If you want to speed it up:
Install Noisium, Lithium and C2ME. These mods can improve generation speed by a bit, but it will still not be fast.
Increase
To see if
CPU Load
in Distant Horizons settings for faster generation, but you will experience more lag spikes and stuttering due to heavier workload on CPU. You are not required to wait for the full generation to finish, although it is better for fps if you do.
To see if
Distant Generator
is really working or not:
1) Check CPU usage while in-game, using Aggressive
settings of CPU Load
. If CPU usage's hovering around 80-100%, the LoDs are generating in the background.
2) Go to DH settings > Advanced Options > Debug > Wireframe
, set Enable Debug Wireframe Rendering
and Show World Gen Queue
to True
.
Enabling both settings will show you the visualization of world gen tasks queued and working on the map (blue boxes for queued tasks, red boxes for working tasks)is there something I could change in DH's settings that you would recommend?
default is fine
and how do I know it will be good to go?
like how much time should I wait
it depends on your hardware, settings, mods, and DH render distance.
there should be a text above your hotbar saying how long it is gonna take
there s nothing there
and my chunks dont seem to load
it did a little bit
oh weird
and then nothing
try the second part of the second part of this message
already did
and do boxes show up?
boxes?
wdym
where should I see them
in your world
ehhhhm
no i dont think so
unless im missing something

is distant generation enabled in DH's settings?
yup
are you on a server or singleplayer?
Im on a server
mine
oh dont tell me I need to install the mod for the server too
I thought it would work if it s client sided
because Im worried we ll have lots of issues if I install the mod on the server too, there s a few people that dont have good PC's and Im afraid they ll experience a lot of issues if I do end up installing the mod on the server
also the bamboo appears to be blocky

ah that explains it
you do
yes but not distant generation
if you install it on the server its still optional for other people
thats a limitation with DH unfortunately. not much you can do about it
are you sure? I heard people saying that it puts a lot of stress on the server and all
it can yes
should I increase my render distance?

thats one of the ways to mitigate it yes
I should probably update it a bit
The GUI had changed a couple of times
dayumn, Im not sure if I should do it then but I feel like I dont have a choice :/
how big of an impact will it have on other ppl?
and what render/ simulation distance should I put?
Flying around is also an option
Depends on the hardware of the server.
Depends. Try and see
it s a free server :/ I dont think it has lots of RAM
Ah yeah, then you probably don't want to put DH on it
Editted the old tutorial to reflect the new GUI and creted a new more complete one: https://discord.com/channels/881614130614767666/1385832852989677660/1414566321747787906
