What determines buoyancy?

Previous answer was demostrating the observation of buoyancy ​but what properties of an object and its surrounding fluid determine if it floats or sinks?

seems to be the density of the object vs the density of the medium clearly little to do with mass. like a larger piece of wood won't sink. a smaller pebble won't float

It’s a density/medium relationship. More dense displaces less dense.
