Very old games from GOG not starting.
Bazzite OS.
Heroic flatpack.
Tried to start some of my classic games (Lands of Lore: Throne of Chaos and Lands of Lore: Guardians of Destiny), which are 90's-era doss games and probably use DOSbox.
I install, it flags the WINE version as not being appropriate and switches to ge-8-26-x86_64.
I click the PLAY button, it says LAUNCHING, then PLAYING, then goes back to normal, and nothing launches or appears on either of my monitors.
I'm a Linux neophyte and need things explained in small words. Anyone have any idea how to fix this?

I added a new word to my vocab, thanks. What a quaint way to say novice.
To help you, we need a game log. Please see the following images on how to get it.

Won't let me upload the log file automatically.
Skimming thorugh the log file, I think this is the relevant part:

share the whole thing, not just the last part
it includes more information that can help, like... is this a linux native game? or a windows game running through proton/wine?
that's important because I think dosbox games installed native have issues, but windows versions work better

how did you install the game? did you install it or imported it? the
GOGLibrary/Lands Of Lore 2/Lands Of Lore 2 duplicated folder looks odd
it's also different than what you had in the previous message
and wine-ge is really old, it's not recommended anymore, you should use ge-proton insteadfair-roseOP•3mo ago
It's what Heroic used by default (I think, there was a popup that said it couldn't find the WINE version it was set to but that it found an another that was compatible, so I clicked 'ok').
A few days ago I tried uninstalling and reinstalling from my GOG library, accessed through Heroic itself.

ge-proton isn't an option in the dropdown menu. Do I need to reinstall Heroic?

wise-white•3mo ago
click the wine manager option in heroic's sidebar, you can install ge-proton there
fair-roseOP•3mo ago
Switched to GE-Proton-Latest. Still doesn't run.

Hi Michael, I'm wondering what distro you're using and your graphics card
flat-fuchsia•3mo ago
Just read the log
Yes but we are not interested in Wine GE log, proton ge one
fair-roseOP•3mo ago
For some reason it's not letting me copy/paste the file itself.

It is either a broken game installation or flatpak wreaking havoc again.
Did you try with appimage heroic?
fair-roseOP•3mo ago
How would I do that? Please remember, I'm an idiot.

does this folder actually exist?
/var/mnt/91cde446-8700-4e0f-857b-9517ed840419/GOGLibrary/Lands Of Lore 2/Lands Of Lore 2/DOSBOX because if it doesn't something failed during installationfair-roseOP•2mo ago
It appears to not exist. Should I uninstall/reinstall?
wise-white•2mo ago
yes, try reinstalling the game
fair-roseOP•2mo ago
Uninstalled, reinstalled, still no dosbox folder. Any idea why?

@Linguin sorry for the ping, but do you know what could be happening here? is this something the galaxy redistributables should take care of?
rival-black•2mo ago
its possible that GOG changed something in the manifest so dosbox isn't downloaded as a dep now
very weird, I'll see if I can debug this soon

If you need me to do anything as a test-bed and report back, let me know.
Anyone have any ideas?

Hi, I experienced a similar problem when installing HoMM III - Horn of the Abyss and Heroes Chronicles [Chapter 8] - Sword of the Frost. Both games theoretically install correctly, but they don’t launch at all. Moreover, I also tried installing Sword of the Frost through Porting Kit, and the problem is the same, so the fault might indeed lie on GOG’s side. I also hope this issue can be resolved for all older games. Should I share my logs as well?
wise-white•2mo ago
@marcin9991 are you having the same missing DOSBOX issue? if not then create a new thread and share logs

I've created a new thread. Hope you will solve your problem @Michael_P_Giffin !
