Migrating to Immich choosing file location

Hey! I want to switch to Immich from NC Memories. I have a few hundred GB of Photos and Videos and I am not entirely sure how to migrate properly. Ideally I would like to just plop in the path to the memories folder into the .env file and call it a day. But I am not sure if that will work. Will Immich pick up that there are images there and add metadata and all that to the DB? I know alternatively that I can add the old storage as external storage and just setup a new directory for immich, but then I would have to rescan everytime I change smth in the old db (I know that rescans are supposed to be fast) and it would fragment my storage which I am not too fond of. I would also ideally like to keep using memories if immich turns out to be missing features, so I would love if I didn't have to remigrate later on. What are my options? I have read through the external library docs (both of them)

In your scenario and external library would probably be best You can just point it at the existing structure and let it scan

okay. How fast exactly are rescans? I read in another thread that one user had them running every 15min

I mean depends on a lot of factors so hard to say. They can be very fast. Depends on library size, system resources, how you have things setup for storage

I dont know if you can help me here but I do have a decently fast cpu (4cores 8 threads up to 3.5GHz) and the data is on 2 zfs mirrored hard drives. any idea how intense the rescans would be? (after the inital one of course)

My guess is nothing crazy unless you are ingesting a lot of new assets every time

okay. well thank you. I suppose I'm gonna go with the external storage and see what comes of it :)
