MFAD Recommends: Overcoats/Topcoats - Topic of the day 9/23/25
To be honest I'm not sure what the difference between an overcoat and topcoat, but if you have one that you like let us know here - the brand, the cost, the size, the material, how to buy it and what makes them so great. If you had an awful pair, let us know what it is and why it sucks.
"MFAD Recommends" is an ongoing series in #topic-of-the-day similar to the "Best [X] for $Y threads" on r/malefashionadvice for product recommendations; archives can be found by searching "MFAD Recommends". Big long coats are so cool
I’ve still yet to find an interesting one
Hopefully will find one on vinted in the next few months 🙂
i need a small loan of $5000

also if were doing some real recomending in this thread, vintage is great there are tons of random 100% wool overcoats out there for very good prices
overcoat technically encompasses more types of coats than topcoat but realistically it doesn't matter to anyone that's not a historian or pedantic about it
bigger and longer the coat, the better. it's just fun to wear and move in
best way to get a really dope coat
Reminiscing about the amazing RL coat I found on eBay, decided to sleep on, and then forgot about :cryingsunglasses:
But yeah i just turned back on my eBay alerts for the fall/winter and it can’t be overstated how many nice vintage ones there are out there
DBF Grandad Coat is so good.

what do we think about trench coats and fishtail parkas? for the milsurp version
I think fishtails are cool, less so trenches
both can be cool, considering the endless variations on them, tho I wouldn't count a fishtail as an overcoat
ironic considering that it overlaps with trenches tho
Love the functionality on this, but I do not live in a place that I'd ever need it. My 2 dressy DB coats came from a thrift store. One is pure cashmere, probably from the 40s. https://youtu.be/tyn22c8_WT4
Remember my Uniqlo overcoat . Baby first overcoat for MFA. Good times.
Currently have a Sandro raglan houdstooth overcoat. Shoulders are the best ever for layering.
I wish for back belts and throat latches, they're cool asf.
If I had space and a bigger need it'd go after a SEH Kelly overcoat in black / grey.
So many overcoats which lived rent free in my head, like from De Bonne Fracture
I love my SEH Kelly one, but lately I've been looking for a grey herringbone one to compliment it.
Lemaire has some of my favorite. I love my Wrap Coat, feels like a bath robe that is acceptable to wear in public.
love the cape like way raglan overcoats hang, and love the more structured regular shoulders on most other overcoats too, really fun way to switch up silhouettes
sorry to be a dbf granddad coat hater, but i think its a bit too short.
Not if you're 5'6" :copium:
I could live with another inch or two in length but it's long enough on me I think.

Obsessed with oversized coats, not so easy to find really long ones for me though since I’m quite tall.
I have one from COS women’s collection from two seasons ago I think. Tried the biggest size they had when I stumbled upon it in store. It was a very pleasant surprise to get a perfect fit. So I’d recommend that.
130cm+ long, throat latch with a convertible collar, martingale (back cinch? I don’t have the word for it), raglan shoulders, very flowy, very dramatic, mid weight. Obviously the wool isn’t the best, it’s from Manteco. Recycled fabric so shorter threads, but it doesn’t really matter in a melton. Not the softest after two years (I may need to clean it, like a plush toy 🤭), but holds up pretty well.
A good alternative to the Lemaire wrap coat, maybe even more wearable I’d say (and honestly the quality of the wool used by Lemaire isn’t that great for 1300 euros… and it’s made in Romania like my COS…).
For me an upgrade would be from Ssstein for sure, maybe Auralee (fabrics are amazing), but not long enough I fear.
One of the best purchases I made, and it was under 300 euros.

Also have an amazing one from studio Nicholson, already shared it here. It’s so heavy! Found it on Vinted for 1/5 of the retail price

So I’m waiting for the cold now
tried on private white vc's english overcoat during their pop up in new york and it was incredible; if you have $2300 + UK duties/shipping costs to spare i recommend it highly https://www.privatewhitevc.com/products/the-english-tweed-overcoat
