Oracle server
Does it worth time to setup oracle server or i just should use Aternos?
Im running free private minecraft server just because no one wants to pay Im forced to use free hosting or use own money to pay for hosting(which i really don't want to since i already gave them my time for free)
localhosting is BAD idea for me and here's why: setup alone will be harder like ddos protection or some way to hide my ip also making sure electricity costs aren't expensive and just getting that one device to host server in first place which sum up to be more expensive for server that will run only couple weeks than buying hosting for month
So Im left with Aternos OR Oracle Cloud or... maybe some other hosting thats also good(falix nodes are really bad so they also don't go here only because conditiones of their hosting is quite worse than aternos you can't download your world without paying them)

What do you plan on achieving on your Minecraft server? Any plugins/mods? Could toss in MineHut.
terralith geophilic also couple structures
also i think ill use amplified nether
endercon(end dimension generation) also geyser and viaversion
also minehut is not option because of 4 hours daily limit which REALLY BAD
lol. Welp, this shows how out of the loop I am with these free server offerings. π
its just endless loops of variations but you always end up with aternos or very hard to setup or strange hosting
How many players and how committed are they? I'm thinking you can give them the iron triangle.

Maybe check out play.hosting
Havenβt tested them but theyβre at least trustworthy
Oracle free wonβt get you blazing performance thatβs for sure
Also doesnβt have ddos protection, but thatβs not something a lot of people need, they just donβt know better
Just remember, you get what you paid for, and if you arenβt paying, you get not a whole lot :minecraftTroll:
they not so stable and require emails for subusers
but im sure its better than aternos isn't it?
What would you need ddos prot for?
You said it was a private free server
So Iβm imagining some friends playing Mc together
The usual 2 week phase
Aternos should be good enough for that
5-8 players
with terralith geophilic and other world generation mods
-# on experience: even with all "RAM" boosts and etc last server was dying because performance was really bad(i think icendium was problem behind it) but this time i got everything like smaller way smaller but i still want members have good experience and aternos is really bad at chunk speed rendering even on vanilla and pre loading with limited storage is really was bad idea(which again i know from experience)
That makes sense, but if you want to play with mods, youβll be able to do that to some degree with free servers, but I feel like youβll quickly reach the limit
That said, you can get some actual servers from a host for less than 10$/month
Which would be 100x better than Aternos or any free host
You wonβt be running into any issues, and you get a lot more freedom
sadly no one wants or going to sponsor server
i already gave them my time for free
but thats why question about is oracle server going be worth setuping than getting other free server hosting is started simply because no one sponsors server in any way and thats one of problems of starting minecraft servers
Oracle will be better than aternos, because anything is better than aternos
For 5 players the oracle free tier should be enough
Not really. He'd probably be able to get away with 3 players without tps going below 18 with some mods
Depends on the mods probably. I run a minigame network on oracle free tier which can handle like 10+ players. So i thought anything which isnt a big modpack should work with only 5
I have similar hardware (in terms of single core performance) at home, and with a pack similar to his (with terralith and other somewhat light mods), 5 players is about the max without tps going below 20
On which continent are you?
My experience is the free Oracle servers are vastly better than the free Minecraft hosting services. There's still limitations as others have mentioned. My lightly modded Fabric world dips below 20 tps with 7 online. That's with generous render and sim distances though, normally it's 3-4 online so I haven't needed to really dial it in. Heavier modpacks like ATM et al run with 3-4 people max online
If you're only considering free services and don't mind using a linux cli it's the way to go IMO
Alright Im back here..
So i ended up using falix nodes(which Im not going continue using anymore)
and i need some help...
which home region is best to use when sign up? capacity of servers matter since each region have different capacity of servers and not all regions have free space for server(im just kinda scared of out of capacity error and i don't want have wait month for script to finally get server for me)
and what about PAYG? i don't want use it only for one solid reason: you can get charged anytime if you slightly exceed limits
also how much i can allocate storage per VM(while staying free) is there limit like "50gb per server is max"?
The limits you can view on the website
You'll want a region near where you and the other players are located. No point in picking Australia if you're all in America π€· I picked Frankfurt, ping from around Europe is fine
Switching to PAYG is the easiest way to get a server quickly. All the free tier benefits still apply. You get 200gb across the 3 free servers you can have iirc, but yeah read the limits on their site
Obligatory, if you're not paying for a product, you probably are the product.
Pretty much every free option is going to suck a little bit.
As far as I'm aware, the most effective way to avoid being charged on a free instance is to set frequent quota alerts and to artificially set resource usage limits via something like docker.
You can use a virtual card with a low balance/freeze it if you're particularly worried about being charged. You should take regular offsite backups as oracle can and will just yank free instances if they need the compute power
virtual cards are normally blocked, but yeah
if you are not using 100% of the cpu, the risk of a deletion is high
You need to use, i think atleast 1/3 actively (i forgot their internal requirements - once some employee told)
if you have set resources, quota and limits isnt really needed to be focused on
just give the vm 4 thread 24 gb ram 200 gb storage, and its free, forever
you generally actually want to use resources on it to not get it terminated
and theres many versions of being the product, are you the product because you watch ads, they sell your data etc, or is it to get you hooked for when you need smth for professional use
Definitely that last one imo. Oracle have been trying to make to get customers from AWS, GCP etc. They're actually often better on pricing (use case dependent) but the platform isn't as mature
Anyway, the rules they follow for reclaiming idle compute are here: https://docs.oracle.com/en-us/iaas/Content/FreeTier/freetier_topic-Always_Free_Resources.htm#freetier_topic_Always_Free_Resources_Service_Limits
It's very easy to stay over the memory utilization threshold, eg. give 1 minecraft server 5GB of RAM minimum and you're there
