Modding Help with Bazzite
So I am trying to mod fallout new vegas to do another playthrough on it and I am following Viva New Vegas as the modding guide. The problem is that when I try and run the install.sh file on my pc it keeps saying it cannot find the prefix for Fallout New Vegas. I have already enabled Proton 9.0-4 compatibility on steam, and I have even regenerated the prefix (i think I did so correctly, used ChatGPT for that lol) but it still does not work. Ostree is not compatible with Protontricks so I had to create a toolbox to run protontricks inside of, but I still cannot figure out why it will not register the installation of New Vegas even though so many others it works perfectly fine for.

GPTs instructions are garbage
if it told you you can't install protontricks
No, terminal said that
I know enough of the syntax to correct gpt
ty 3 months of coding in college that i barely remember lol
protontricks is installable via bazar
I did have to correct gpt a few times though but overall it worked like 95% of the time
Yeah.. I um.. kinda found that out this morning and almost cried ðŸ˜
I spent 2 hours on this last night
then tried to run OG fallout and shut that down bc idk how to play top down rpgs XD
so we are sticking to 3d games for now 😛
to create the prefix you have to run the game once at least
well maybe not have to
I had some people in the subreddit mention that I could mod without MO2 which.. is definitely true. But the problem is ESP load order (not sure how to change this in manual modding), and stuff like the 4gb patcher and NVSE
GPT told me to run it and it generated one but it wouldnt register
maybe in fallout.ini
or whatever it\s called
Careful with LLMs if it's a rare thing it'll make stuff up.
Also for mods themselves from nexus might I recommend learning Limo which is a mod manager with I believe load order items that can access the NexusMods api.
You may be right because when doing the midnight ride for fallout 4 you copy over a INI file dictating load order.. but I have never tried it for NV
Have you ever tried Steamtinkerlaunch with proton up qt?
no idea what either of those are so i will have to find that out
I just got super good at windows and realized how bad it truly is then I meet the final boss, Linux
STL is a sort of compatibility tool like proton it lets you run multiple EXEs in the same prefix one before/after another
among other things
has an option to install Vortex as well
If I could avoid vortex I would love to but if not I shall accept my fate
So this may be a good option for me to run something like NVSE xNVSE.exe and the 4gb patcher.exe you think?
you don't need those patches with Proton
Wait really?
Does it patch NV similar to them?
Proton's memory management is different & in this case better than what Windows has
so the game can use the memory right off the bat
Limo.
It ties into the vortex API with nexus.
It's not as "friendly" of a ui mind you. You need to get an api key generated for your nexus mods account. But it'll interact with it. Main trouble spot is you do have to manually specify the deploy location if it can't find it,.
I dont know half of what you just said but I will check it out. So Limo may be my best option if installing protontricks through bazaar and re-running everything does not work?
Does not work to get MO2 fixed
Not sure on the rest BUT Limo will be your stand in for vortex in all liklihood.
So fall back to Limo if MO2 does not work. Gotcha. That is installable through bazaar yes
Yep. You will have to follow a guide that it may have in built on grabbing a key from nexus so it can auto download the mods, though. And set a deploy location. Sadly I only use it for managing my monster hunter mods but I'm sure there is probably guides for it with new vegas.
i wonder if you can just get the API key from within chrome dev tools
There's a spot in the account page but it's like hard to spot
though generating one if possible is probably safer
an API key is essentially an username/password
It's a long string of numbers, etc that say "Hey I belong to this dude"
that allows an app to use your account
to some extent
Also jesus new vegas modding is more intimidating than I thought. Though there's a ton of small mod manager projects but I can't tell which are good or bad. One is written entirely in python.
you can often limit what the key can do
yeah its been a few years since Ive done a nexus api key but i remember it being pretty easy
Hm...says here...
You may be able to do it even easier than we're thinking
This is why we follow mod guides here XD
I'd rather let people who know more than me sift through mods and tell me safe ones to make the game more stable
Which is...use lutris for vortex and it can do the rest.
THAT SAID. I can't eaxctly READ the full thing. And it is reddit...
(Reddit blocks me because of my vpn oh noooo)
Reddit also said to download all the files on windows and port them over
which i mean
COULD WORK
if I patch the nv exe file
But one of yall said I dont even have to worry about patching it

Now it IS reddit
So take it with a grian of salt
But apparently lutris has vortex mod manager installer that will look at steam so....if it still works. Might be the easiest option
Lutris is through bazaar yes?
Ill tolerate vortex if it works lol
yeah
So, so far I am at 1) Installing Proton Tricks through Bazaar and then 2) installing Lutris Through bazaar
Lutris is actually preinstalled on bazzite
Is there a step in between those you think im missing
i was able to install/run vortex via lutris a few years ago
Might be the same steps now.
Sadly as I only mod simpler games without load orders or madness I um can't help much more than some of these ideas.
Maybe they have improved vortex
I know MO2 has a less friendly ui but its the linux to vortex's windows
(I still try to use Limo cause natively running stuff is nice, but I have NO idea if limo can do some of the madness needed for fallout)
hmm what does vortex even do for fallout?
i know generally it just creates symlinks
to put files into place
Vortex is a friendlier to the eyes version of MO2 with less capabilities
You can do a lot of the same stuff in Vortex as you can in MO2
but its a little more tricky
But its easier to learn the basics for beginners and easier to manage multiple games inside of
I prefer MO2 for functionality reasons, primarily dividing mods into groups in load order then easily being able to reorder load order for ESPs
