Modding Help with Bazzite
So I am trying to mod fallout new vegas to do another playthrough on it and I am following Viva New Vegas as the modding guide. The problem is that when I try and run the install.sh file on my pc it keeps saying it cannot find the prefix for Fallout New Vegas. I have already enabled Proton 9.0-4 compatibility on steam, and I have even regenerated the prefix (i think I did so correctly, used ChatGPT for that lol) but it still does not work. Ostree is not compatible with Protontricks so I had to create a toolbox to run protontricks inside of, but I still cannot figure out why it will not register the installation of New Vegas even though so many others it works perfectly fine for.

Careful with LLMs if it's a rare thing it'll make stuff up.
Also for mods themselves from nexus might I recommend learning Limo which is a mod manager with I believe load order items that can access the NexusMods api.
You may be right because when doing the midnight ride for fallout 4 you copy over a INI file dictating load order.. but I have never tried it for NV

STL is a sort of compatibility tool like proton it lets you run multiple EXEs in the same prefix one before/after another

Proton's memory management is different & in this case better than what Windows has
so the game can use the memory right off the bat

It ties into the vortex API with nexus.
It's not as "friendly" of a ui mind you. You need to get an api key generated for your nexus mods account. But it'll interact with it. Main trouble spot is you do have to manually specify the deploy location if it can't find it,.

Yep. You will have to follow a guide that it may have in built on grabbing a key from nexus so it can auto download the mods, though. And set a deploy location. Sadly I only use it for managing my monster hunter mods but I'm sure there is probably guides for it with new vegas.

though generating one if possible is probably safer

i was able to install/run vortex via lutris a few years ago

Sadly as I only mod simpler games without load orders or madness I um can't help much more than some of these ideas.

I know MO2 has a less friendly ui but its the linux to vortex's windows
(I still try to use Limo cause natively running stuff is nice, but I have NO idea if limo can do some of the madness needed for fallout)

Vortex is a friendlier to the eyes version of MO2 with less capabilities
You can do a lot of the same stuff in Vortex as you can in MO2
but its a little more tricky
But its easier to learn the basics for beginners and easier to manage multiple games inside of
I prefer MO2 for functionality reasons, primarily dividing mods into groups in load order then easily being able to reorder load order for ESPs

i just downloaded Fallout New Vegas and proton tricks
I opened proton tricks and selected FNV
then it gave me the option I showed originally, then when I clicked default prefix it popped up this after a few info pop ups

And the spark ignition cylinders support gasoline, lpg, and kerosene while the diesel cylinder supports only diesel. No but a question is what type of GPU do you have and are you using displayport or hdmi. Also what resolution. Just to see if maybe we can take a guess if it's HDMI or not. Since HDMI's 2.1 standard is stonewalled to us so AMD is stuck using 2.0
Its HDMI 2.0 I believe. It can 100% handle the 180hz because its an option available on both windows and linux but on linux it causes issues
its a 5800x paired with a 6700xt
I also have a 180hz 1440p monitor on a dual boot setup with an rx 7900xtx and bazzite works just fine at max settings for that

I have flatseal and protontricks installed this time
so I think something happened and I got a faulty install the first time
last time I had to install both protontricks and flatseal as they were not in the pc by default
So
I also got a pop up where i have to allow proton tricks to have access to the steam folder
which may have been my issue before
I did put the command into the terminal so we shall see what happens

distrobox just allows you to create instances of other linux distros on your machines, which can be useful for installing packages from other package managers

Like I made a bunch of progress figuring out the REASON MO2 wouldnt even start launching is because of vcruntime2019 and dotnet48
vcruntime2019 downloads easily
but dotnet48 is struggling for its life

there isnt one for LIMO on nexus
You need to generate a custom one I think

Half the battle is doing things differently than windows spent most of your life ingraining and learning how they work. Wine is one of the weirder ones, yeah, but you do get used to it.

The best way to find where the prefix is on disk is to go to the game properties in steam and browse local files. That'll take you right to the game directory inside the prefix. Each prefix has its own drive_c and all that fun stuff.
They're basically isolated "copies" of windows. Don't worry it deduplicates so it doesn't take up as much space as you'd think.
They're not vms per se, but basically a faked directory system so apps see the directory paths and go "Ah...windows..."
Wine actually stands for "Wine Is Not an Emulator"

We actually don't NEED file extensions. They're just nice. Linux usually relies on data in the file to determine what it is instead of extensions.

.sh is just our equivilant of a .bat
.bat is windows commands command line stuff, .sh is linux command line stuffs
Heck might be able to run the sh in terminal and see if it has a help menu. Open it in notepad and see if they check for "--help" or something anywhere.
But yeah since those are linux commands...if it's JUST the sh...
Honestly running it in the new vegas folder might be what it wants.

Yeah sh is just a shell script. Which is what bat are but they're called batches because they're batches of commands but-well yeah. They're basically the same sorta thing just linux commands vs windows commands.

So if you open it in Kate you'll probably find it somewhat recognizable pretty quick if you're used to batch

I'm looking if it checks anywhere in particular for the files. It does seem to support a custom game argument, but lets see if we can update where it looks first.

The logic in there handles custom games, but it tosses over to select_game.sh for detection
Or i.e. it checks if the user is doing custom, if not it grabs another batch file. And yes unlike batch files scripts can return data without pipes.
So if a script file is called it can return data to the parent

I am trying to get used to a new phone system and work and its not the most convenient lol
So yeah we're still working on it, but first things first is if you want to use like the mod installer or the like...
Gotta "leave the vault" first or the prefix won't be setup right. Seems to be some proton bug fix making numbered prefixes and only making one protontricks can see after you leave the "Vault". In new vegas' case you need to at least get out of mitchell's house
Then it starts working
Apparently applies all the way to fallout 4
So the general gist of getting this fixed will be set in these steps here (hopefully) in order!
1) ensure you have a high speed and stable ETHERNET connection (Using Wifi can cause installation failures)
2) Ensure that Steam Compat settings are set for whatever Proton Version MO2 says you need to use
3)Launch Fallout New Vegas Or Fallout 4, complete the "tutorial" and save then exit the game. For FNV the tutorial is leaving Doc Mitchell's house after doing his tests. For F4 it is leaving the Vault.
4) ONLY TESTED FOR NV SO FAR: Regenerate a new prefix for NV, it auto generates as stuck for Windows XP so if you regenerate a new one using Proton Tricks it can help substantially. Make sure after you generate a new prefix (32bit) you reopen proton tricks for NV and then click use "defualt prefix" and click on run winecfg. In application it will show what windows version it is emulating. I set it to win10 and hit apply.
5) Use Protontricks, click on the game you are trying to mod, then install whatever Direct X version the game requires (DX9_38 for NV and DX11 for 4 i believe) then install dotnet40, dotnet48, and vcruntime 2022(this installs 2015-2022 for that prefix automatically).
6) The real final step should just be to open the extracted Mo2 download folder inside of the terminal type "./install.sh" and it SHOULD work and install correctly.
Note: I am not a coding expert, if it was not for @FinnFann I never would have figured this out so props to em. This is a very simplified version of the most prominent steps we took in order to get this to work so it may or may not work for you as well
@MrFallout I've been trying for two days to get MO2 to work with FO3 on Steam in Bazzite. I get good success... except MO2 doesn't actually launch. Any ideas?

Hm. Im still a newbie myself but if its not launching mo2 when you installed it it most likely means its not actually installing mo2 INSIDE the prefix

I never tried to get mo2 in fallout 3 since it doesn't have a good modding guide available or any really good mods
You also have to make sure you leave the vault at least once to make steam use the appropriate prefix, then once you get mo2 working you can do another olaythrough

Here's an odd thing... When I point the Steam launcher "Start" button to the MO2 redirector, it creates dozens of .dmp files in the Fallout 3 directory, but never loads the launcher, MO2, or the game.
Did you create a brand new prefix for the game before trying to install mo2? I created new prefixes for all my fallout games i modded as well and pointed it towards the new and renamed prefixes
I did a clean prefix. Didn't work. But ultimately I learned about Limo and used that instead. Works pretty well. Not as full-featured as MO2. But it's Linux native, and runs FO3 fine.
