how can i use the output of the ente export cli to restore ente to the backed up state?
i tried just uploading the folder, which gets the images, but skips the json files which would need to get added to the database.
backing up user information as well would be useful, but it's not currently clear how to make use of the
ente export output.1 Reply
Ente guarantees that you will get back the exact same original photos and videos that you imported. Modifications made within Ente, such as date changes, will be written into a separate metadata JSON file during export.
When you export your library, you will end up with the original file (e.g.,
flower.png) and a corresponding metadata JSON file (e.g., metadata/flower.png.json). Ente writes this JSON in the same format as Google Takeout, so if a tool supports Google Takeout import, it should be able to read the JSON. Ente itself will read it from either the metadata/ subfolder or next to the file. More details can be found at https://help.ente.io/photos/faq/metadata#export.
To import photos, simply drag and drop the folders into the desktop app. If uploads get interrupted, drag and drop the folders into the same albums again, and Ente will ignore already backed up files and upload the rest. More details can be found at https://help.ente.io/photos/migration/from-local-hard-disk#import-photos-from-your-local-hard-disk.
