Bazzite taking forever to read Audio Cds
Hey so I'm just trying to do the simplest task ever for a computer (read an audio cd) but it's taking forever with my laptop using a USB cd drive which would almost instantaneously load on my windows pc, is there anything I can do to fix this?

it genuinely takes like 10 minutes to read a single track
No actually. Fre:AC rips tracks for me with verification and paranoia mode faster than that.
I'd give another music player a shot first if you're using rhythmbox since that's pretty old
I've tried VLC, Haruna and Rythmbox
doesn't matter what software I use it just takes forever
I've tried burnt cds and genuine cds
Hmn...have you tried another USB port?
Which sounds ridiculous, but sometimes that can make a difference
I've only got 1 usb port
Well shit
this laptop is absolute dogshit
Yeah I can tell
Flippin weird...hm...
I've tried like 5 different Google searches trying to fix this and nothing even shows up
Now when you say fast on windows is it fast on windows on the same laptop? Just to verify that
nah I ain't ever had Windows installed on this laptop, it just works really fast on my main pc which does have better specs but I thought it wouldn't matter
I know it isn't the cd drive
It can actually. USB A, the port you're using if it's a big square, has 3 versions
1.1, 2.0, 3.0, and 3.1
They are each pretty different in speed and power output. The drive may well be being starved or slowed down by the laptop.
(4 major versions*)
well the inside of mine is just grey
aside from the silver of the port
Yeah red usually indicates 3.1, blue indicates 3.0...USUALLY...
And there's almost no way to tell 1.x and 2.x apart
mmm
I'm checking if there's a command we can use
See what port version it's using
Do you know the laptop model?
I can probably look it up faster than a command.
it is a hp chromebook 15a-na0007na
oh god it's a chromebook. Already let me see.
yes I know chromebooks are ass
this is like my first time using Linux too
Man they don't even have to be I swear they TRY to make them ass.
Like putting atom processors in them that are so slow it needs a special firefox version to run right
chromebook is just another term for landwaste
100%
Alright HP doesn't want to give me an answer so lets try these commands. Never checked speeds this way but never too late to learn.
Lets start with this. Give me the terminal output of
lspci | grep USB
one sec
Also this one
lsusb -t | grep xhci
for some reason it still thinks there's a cd when I literally disconnected the cd drive
Hell of a machine for your first linux forray. Bazzite's pretty heavy by most standards. I'd have used something like lubuntu or something a lot lighter like peppermint.
But lets find out drive speed first.
Also out of curiosity open system monitor and lemme know your ram and swap.
I have another pc I got bazzite installed on which is better but I've found bazzite to just be so frustrating even when trying to install something like pcpassmark
To see if it's ram starved too.
mmkk
just resetting the laptop rq
Honestly can probably help with that too. Something to note that a lot of linux first timers do that you should never do is try to install software off the web. Linux has had no standard installers since we rely on either package management or things like flatpak. So most installers out there online are gonna be subpar and "Might work" at best.
So it's usually our last resort unlike windows where it's first resort.
I'm so used to downloading stuff off the web lmfao
Yeah that habbit bites new users to linux the hardest.
But we were using things like software stores back around Windows XP
i genuinely spent like an hour 30 trying to install a ps3 pkg manager last night but just couldn't get it to work
Yeah absolutely come here first with stuff like that and lemme find my snippit. Don't mind the copy pasta.
and then installed it on my windows pc and boom no suprise it worked instantly
pff -w-
Well you ARE used to windows and most devs we're second hand citizens too. And yeah I wrote something up just for software management ideas.
COPYPASTA GO
-----
For bazzite the ways to get software in order are
The developers' ranking (from most to least-recommended) is:
- ujust scripts (terminal or portal in menu)
- Flatpak (Bazaar in menu. Flatseal & Warehouse to manage permissions or cleanup)
- Homebrew (terminal as 'brew')
- Quadlet (container as systemd service) (setup in text files and ran via terminal)
- Distrobox (Distroshelf program in menu)
- AppImage (Gear Lever from Bazaar to add them to menu. They don't auto update, be aware. Not without setting it up in gear lever)
- Layering (rpm-ostree install PACKAGENAME or rpm-ostree install PACKAGENAME.rpm. Do not use this if you can avoid it)
https://docs.bazzite.gg/Installing_and_Managing_Software/
Something to note is linux is generally the opposite of windows when it comes to software. Getting software from the web is a last-resort and has been for the longest time. We used software stores, in some form or another, for a very very long time. Much longer than windows. You want to check if it's packaged locally in various forms before relying on web sources. They're often unreliable and may or may not work on your system.
right I'm gonna try those commands now
Getting it from the net is "Nothing else works" and usually requires hand holding for a new user.
me using rpm-ostree to install practically everything so far
OH GOD
I don't even know if your updates will work now XD
Depending what you install that way it can make your updates stop working because of dependency issues.
the fuck? lmfao
Honestly if you tell me what you installed that way I can probably help you with where to grab em
It's a long explanation as to why but basically RPM Ostree modifies the base image which means you can get package conflicts which is what bazzite tries to avoid by making installing things like that not a thing much as we can
Package management like that was the traditional way to install on linux, but it can lead to issues and really I don't think you care for the long explanation
But if you introduce a package conflict it can't update because it'd break something you layered.
Bazzite is a pretty new way of doing things even by linux standards.
damn
and I thought linux was supposed to be easy to use
I think it's great, but things have to catch up but most of those programs you can probably get other ways. Buuuut I'm waiting forever on code to build so I can help :>
guess the memes weren't really lying lmao
Nawh it's not that hard.
The big problem is not knowing what to do which is actually fairly simple it's just that windows habits make it hardest.
Lemme know what those commands are. And run this one too!
rpm-ostree status
so I can see what you layered. Tell ya how to get em.I just tried lspci grep usb and it came up with this

Did you include the pipe character?
This one
|
mmm one sec
Gotta be sure since what that does is grep grabs the data and pipe means it hands it over to the other command to process.
Don't mind me knowing a bit more. I was in this back in 2009.
deadass?
I'm old send help all I got was a shirt and backpain.
bro I was 2 then
lmfao
It'll happen to you too! Take care of your damn back. It's the first thing that'll go.

Also eevees. AND flareon. Based.
I think my back is fucked already lmao I haven't been using a back rest since 2021 since my chair is my bed
You FOOL. It'll only get worse!
yeaaa love eevees lmfao
gotta get worse to get better lmao
Alright lemme check that screenshot
Oh you didn't need any of those layered packages XD
just now realising I don't have that key and if I was on Windows I'd just win + space to change my keyboard region to fix that
Shit so you can't copy paste I take it
using disc on my phone rn
Hum...What to do without a pipe character...
one sec lemme just Firefox the pipe character lol
THAT WORKS TOO
Clearly this chromebook was not intended for non web browsing.
chromebooks are genuinely only designed for youtube
that's it
They even fail at that these days.
lmfaoo
Gotta use the h264ify plugin on the browser with older ones to force h.264 videos.
If you have trouble by the way, get that browser extension.
It tells youtube "Screw off give me h.264". They're larger, but FAR faster for hardware that weak
did that and now got nothing

Well poo. Hmn...
that happens with other commands too sometimes
Well lets make a decision first. Wanna grab software the right way first or do this first?
Cause I can teach you how to get vlc, k3b, etc super fast.
Also you'll wanna uses the program "Disks". It's basically replaced gparted a long time ago, and definitely don't have apt.
For proton vpn we have some other ways to do that too.

(much easier if you don't need split tunneling)
ALRIGHT lets take a looksee here
Okay that's usb 2.0
I already got protonvpn installed
That could be part of the problem but it shouldn't be THAT bad
Well I mean the proper way so you can get support.
Since OFFICIALLY others can't help if you get it that way.
I'm just bored
Seriously this code is taking forever
(on my end)
pfft
I mean I got this sooo

Yeah that one I think is a no arch so I don't think you have to worry about proton
It's apt, gparted, k3b, python (which should've been preinstalled), and vlc that'll bring up less support.
I already got vlc and k3b installed on this
Yes but again if you have it installed that way you won't get support.
Since that's an unsupported way of doing it.
So lemme show you the way to get it where you won't be turned away. Just tryin ta help
because I was originally gonna rip an album to a blank cd but then figured out that cd read speeds are super slow
ALSO Fre:AC is better ;P
I think I did it with flatpak?
yea I did
Fre:AC looks like ASS but still
It says you layered it so that's what confuses me
Layering means you used rpm-ostree but you should've just used the software store bazaar which is in your main menu
yeaa I gotta learn to use that more
Bazaar got everything
Almost
It has proton too, though from what I know the split tunneling on it doesn't work.
mmmhm
So lets redo some stuff. Since rpm-ostree is what matters.
aight
Now...prefix. This'll remove anything layered. But it'll put you in a state you'll get help here more openly, and you'll be told to do it before you get support regardless.
That's
rpm-ostree reset
That'll remove all the layered stuff and return your system to baseline. Then I can walk you through vlc, I'll push for fre:ac just because it's ugly as sin but a FANTASTIC cd ripper (all the fancy features).
We'll want to avoid apt. You can use that through a distro box which if you ever need you can check our docs. Pretty easy from what I hear.
And for gparted you'll wanna use the program built in "Disks" instead. Much less ugly.
And hopefully we don't run into any issues from the layering.yeah i tried gparted once, didn't even work lmfao
Yeeeah disks is just better.
Gparted is also available on bazaar too.
But disks is what replaced it.
mhmm
And don't worry once you get used to installing software this way it gets a lot easier. It's the biggest thing that catches users offguard.
figured that out when I was trying to install a game onto my ps3 and figured out you can't install rufus onto Linux
Yeah we got plenty of other tools instead of rufus. If you're just trying to write an ISO to usb I'd recommend Fedora Media Writer which is also in bazaar or a few other ones.
Rufus is windows only in this case.
Now I don't know if fedora media writer will work for PS3 games. Can't help on that front.
Just can offer it as something to write isos to a USB
So yeah lets run rpm-ostree reset. I'm going to step away just for a moment to get some tests running so I can get back on my bazzite machine too so if needed I can record videos of what I do for ya.
yeah I tried installing it through lutris on the wine compatibility layer but it wouldn't work regardless since Windows uses lettered drives and Linux used whatever home/var is
Yeah linux doesn't have a concept of a "drive" per se.
Just partitions.
right just ran rpm-ostree reset now it's telling me to reboot
Yep reboot. You'll probably be missing some software but all that we can get back through the official channel.
I'll be right back
I mean all I have to do is use a fat32 drive for rap files (game activation files and other pkg's since fat32 is the main format used by ps3 for usb drives) and ntfs (which I use to get bigger games onto my ps3)
it's really just transferring iso files
or pkg's
Oh yeah disks will let you format to fat 32. Just word of advice don't try to game off them in bazzite itself. WIndows file systems don't have needed permissions for linux gaming. But it sounds like you're just transferring them off the computer which is fine.
Also back not not quite. Gotta kick off some stuff at work fast
alright gotcha
Oh also I forgot but another chat reminded me. Also NEVER use GPT, etc for linux help. It's very bad at it. Usually it'll give you answers that are like 10 years old and don't work.
And if they do work it's usually only for ubuntu.
The problem with LLMs like them is they have so much info they have PLENTY of bad data to grab from.
I used Google ai once when I was trying to install that ps3 pkg manager but it said I had to convert scripts from python 2 to python 3 and install 2to3 or whatever the fuck
packages not found and I'm like cmon man
lol wtf
Yeah probably hallucinating. That's what they call that in AI by the way. When it makes shit up it's called hallucinations.
lmfao
They can't think they can only respond with what word would PROBABLY come next. So if it doesn't have a lot of data stored on something it grabs whatever -might- be next according to probability.
For something with LOTS of modern data it can work great, but for anything niche? Man it makes crap up fast.
ai can steal a job but can't help me install a program onto Linux
what a world we live in
Tell me about it. I'm in the tech industry. The number of CEOs foaming at the mouth to replace us with a machine that can barely do the work of an intern is nuts.
pfft
All because some salesperson told them it was smart.
I've been learning IT for 2 years
still can't get an apprenticeship in IT despite applying for 2 months
"but what about the shareholders Bob? who's helping them out huh?"
The funny thing is I am a shareholder after my grandmother passed.
First thing I told the guy?
DO NOT PUT THIS MONEY INTO AI.
And for the love of god if I hear you voted against workers rights I will shiv you.
Wasn't gonna let my guy have free reign over my investment money. I'm having him do what -I- want. Profits be damned.
Alright got my tests running at work lemme swap to bazzite.
neatt
And switched over.
Alright toss me your new
rpm-ostree status
just to be sure we have a clean slate.also if you could do you know any performance tricks for bazzite since I swear I'm getting worse fps on cs2 even though I was getting stable 60's on windows (not on the laptop of course)

Hmn...unfortunately no. Usually the issue is if you have nvidia since their drivers have problems now which you unfortunately can't do much about. (don't worry they're up to date. Word of advice NEVER try to install them yourself. It's a nightmare even I wouldn't go through)
But you can certainly ask in #🎮gaming-general
Sweet we're on a clean image!
Alright lemme record using bazaar to grab VLC and the rest are gonna be just like that.
I tried installing nvidia drivers on Linux once, quickly found out I can't
I swear a friend of mine gave me a command for launching cs2 lemme find it rq
Yeah nvidia drivers are...agony...their installer works on like...one distro?
Even then it will wipe itself every major upgrade.
So using the one that bazzite came with, which will be newest, is always best.
SDL_VIDEO_DRIVER=wayland %command%
Hmn...
that's what I put in the launch options for cs2
Did you ever try running without that to see if it worked better?
It can vary per card. Depends how old your card is.
ALSO here's the video of me grabbing VLC from bazaar.
Don't mind my taskbar up top
-# I just like it that way
Also you don't NEED to refresh bazaar like I did. Just did it to show how to do it.
is a 1050ti old
Yeah tell me about it ha. I'm just wondering if you might be using the wrong nvidia image we have. That's something for the game channel to help with though.
Now lets see...K3b isn't in the store, but I think it's discontinued.
neatt yeah I got vlc installed that way
For CD ripping?
fre:ac
You'll wanna search and grab that bad boy
Ugly as hell, but powerful as hell too.
I did install both k3b and fre:ac
You'll have to do it again probably since we wiped rpm-ostree layering.
aight
If not then sweet they're still there.
Also are you used to foobar2000? Cause there's an app just like it too.
Fooyin it's called.
yea I still got it
think I used foobar like once?
can't even remember what it was
Elisa is another good one.

Rhyhtmbox is so old I wanna point you at anything neater and newer XD
that genuinely looks like itunes
I mean it is an album one. There's others. Got a look you prefer in a player?
I've tried a few
i just mostly use spotify sooooo
it's kinda just out there since all my liked stuff is in random spots
Lets see...there's the official spotify app we got in bazaar.
For loal music lemme see if anything looks similar.
local*
small portion of my music taste lmao

Ah phooey there's too many to choose from and my taste in music player is too ancient.
I'm personally a weirdo that mostly goes game music but if I had to pick a genre we need more symphonic rock.
Starset's real good too, though
Alright check if you still have proton it's probably been uninstalled. Lets go through what you need to get back
Proton VPN should be in the bazaar store too if you look it up, though the split tunneling I think doesn't work right now but if you don't care for that you'll be fine with that one.

It's not an official version, but it is just Proton's package grabbed and installed as a flatpak so it's technically official.
(it's safe don't worry)
Also without the layered stuff we can give the CD drive another go but something tells me it's just the chromebook not working well.
-# I challenge you to try to get that chromebook to play a single ps3 game

No don't it'll catch fire XD
Also you're young enough I don't think this existed when you came about so...
Everyone thinks windows only had solitaire but no it used to have this shit built in

Pretty good pinball game, actually
I got it running gmod at 57 fps so I'll try it lmao
-# o no
Hahaha if it runs a ps3 game well I'll eat my own hat. Good thing I don't own any.
well you better buy one lmao
Oh god please no. Closest I have is a hoodie and I wanna keep that.
But yeah. Most of your software? Just grab like this.
You can check ujust stuff first, which handles weird things like emudeck and stuff Can show all those with
ujust --choose
in terminal to get a small little gui.
Can't find something? Heck ask in bazzite after checking the others fast. Anything but layering :Ppff alright then
(i.e. avoid rpm-ostree it's there as an emergency)
so no more rpm-ostree ?
got it lol
Yep it's there pretty much as a last ditch "Literally no other way"
mmhmm
And if you wanna play a TECHNICALLY impressive game.
Sonic Roboblast 2
A sonic game literally coded from the doom engine. Things been being worked on for like...15 years.
I think I'll try littlebigplanet 2 on rpcs3 since it shouldn't be too complicated
(when a ps3 game takes up a quarter of your disk space xd)
You would not think this was the Doom 1 engine

I think I've seen this before?
It's been around a LONG TIME now.
but yea doom is basically the "if it has a screen it will run doom"
Pretty damn much
and now doom is the "if it can be coded it will be run"
Someone found most resume uploaders allow enough file space for the whole sourcecode of doom 1
Someone said "Don't joke" and dude was like "it's 2.3mb"
Christ Sonic Roboblast 2 is still being worked on and is over 25 years old at this point
getting doom to work off a tamogatchi
Dude someone had doom running on the windows processor window
They had a xeon server processor with like 128 cores and they used the cores to display doom. Like actually increased and decreased workload on them to display doom.
It was wild
I swear there's a ps1 emulator that shows the individual transistors now
I would not be surprised in the slightest.
pfft
I still remember when PS1 emulation was a huge deal.
I'm 37 by the way.
So I've seen some shit.
Personally I never got to play doom on release. Parents were too frugal. But I got to play a demo of descent 1.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFbKXU8IF7U
Old type of game you don't see anymore. They were called 6dof shooters.
6 degree of freedom
daaamn
Granted it didn't look this good.
18 here, practically a baby lmfao
Rule number 1. You only get smarter to a point, then everything is bone hurting.
pfft
ever heard of chex quest
YES FUCKING
I BEGGED MY PARENTS FOR A BOX OF CEREAL WITH THAT GAME IN IT
Did you know they rereleased it, though?
yup
got it on steam
and I've played the original
I played the original. Even then that shit was cool for being free.
deadass
A free doom clone? Yes please.
free doom game with your cereal?
man I wish that shit existed now
Now we get "Scan qr code to take part in the mcdonalds monopoly"
lowkey rely on that for free big macs lmao
Speaking of which, mcdonalds monopoly never had a fair winner. The dude they choose to distribute tickets sold all the winners to his friends. Didn't get caught for 20 years.
And he SPECIFICALLY only gave loosing sheets to canada.
No idea why
ehh I doubt anyone would win it anyway
Pretty much. But back then there was a chance if he hadn't stepped in and stole them all.
it's the same food corp that makes a cheeseburger £20 through their points system
Well now I know where you're from using the pound symbol.
Man they're ever worse over here in the US
They get to use grade D meat here. Which is "human consumable".
gahhh I have been found
-w-
yeah yall fda standards are
yeah
They're not even standards they're just rules to not kill people outright.
hmm
guess it's better for the pharmaceutical industry that way
God I hate that industry too...I know some good doctors at that and their hands are tied by all the bad ones.
Can't get cough medicine that works but they'll hand you a straight vial of pure morphine with the right excuse.
anyways I got rpcs3 running
just compiling the ppu modules
Alright I'm probably gonna head off after this (better ask your questions now) But I gotta know how it runs
pfft I'll let you know
but nah I ain't got no questions
I'll prolly ask em later as they come
I'm just glad I could help you get to installin things right :> And feel free to ask #🎮bazzite too. This area helps keep track of things like big issues, but small ones? Usually you'll get an answer quicker there. Provided it hasn't descended into a food conversation or something.
pfft
But yeah...Imma head off to rest. You have a good one. And keep on learning. Half of learning linux is to fight the urge to do something like windows.
gotcha haha
Peace!
thanks for the help lmfao

update: the game doesn't even launch, I dumped everything to as low as I could and it just don't work lmao
also it still takes forever to read an audio cd
Yeeeah probably gonna be stuck with those issues with the Chromebook id unfortunately guess. I'm shocked it runs well as it does.
welll shiit
I tried installing w10 on it at one point but I literally couldn't since it wouldn't even register keyboard / touchpad inputs
and I couldn't plug a keyboard in since yk
one usb slot
A lighter distro might show success. But most of them are Ubuntu or Debian and the old packages they come with.
But I think the CD drive issue is gonna be persistent.
I really wanted to use bazzite since I thought it would be a good switch from w10 but my experience of it has been utter shit thus far
Well the chrome book issue I can't answer but be sure to poke in the main chat or gaming general about those parts. The chrome book is just gonna be a chromebook but the desktop stuff I'm sure you can get resolved! I'm just burnt out from the week or id help more
aahh that makes sense
I'm just frustrated from how garbage my experience of bazzite has been
Eh it's your first foray into Linux. People had similar experiences going between windows versions once upon a time. All about asking for help and learning again.
The switch from xp to Vista was a massive shit show just like going from Windows to linux.
So hey go ask for help! And you can always dual boot and have both so you can unwind while you learn. S'how I did it
But I'm gonna go binge watch some speed runs of Metroid and rest. So go take an unwind and hit up #🎮bazzite and #🎮gaming-general on the issues with your desktop!
aight then
again thanks lmao
Hey no problem! And listen
You were willing to listen and learn so I think you'll figure out how to do things for sure. If it takes dual booting that's how it'll go. Have a good one!
dual booting on 110gb of internal storage
