pre-generating World

Yesterday, around late morning, I started pre-generating my world in creative mode, and then I received a file of about 3GB. Now I'm wondering if my method was correct. I copied the file and sent it to my main map from this copy in the same file where I retrieved the pre-generation file. Is this the correct method, or am I mistaken? Because I don't think it's having any effect on my main map. Do you have any settings you would recommend?
