Love it! It sounds like you might take “some random resistor in kicad” and convert it to your native <resistor element … which is good… but if you use your 0402/0603/whatever… footprint based on what you parse out that wouldn’t be an exact match. If you use the kicad footprint that is specified in the PCB file, that’s better. However the user may have also changed that instance of that footprint in the PCB file from the “stock library definition” which would also be worth identifying for now. Lastly is custom user footprints in the PCB… you can extract the footprint out from the PCB file. You would be missing the 3D Models as those do not come with. Your parser can see the reference and you can ask the user for them afterwards… …all fun later problems. (that I totally haven’t spent the last 2 years already dealing with)
