Specialty Tailor or my Dry Cleaner
I have a S&M suit that needs to be let out at the waist (both jacket and trousers). I need it in 2 weeks, so not enough time to return them and size up. I measured both, and there should be enough seam allowance - though a little worried about the hips/seat on the trousers.
I usually take stuff to my dry cleaner. She does a good job, but haven’t done more than shortening sleeves/hems. Is letting out a waist simple enough for a dry cleaner tailor? Or should I try to find a dedicated menswear tailor (NYC if anyone has recs).

Hi @pianoguyyyy! For better answers, include:
- Reference pictures
- Budget in numbers
- Specific measurements
- Openness to buying secondhand and/or online
- Location: country/continent is fine
- Timing/urgency
some tailors that work out of dry cleaners can be decent, but I've had pretty bad luck with a few
for anything more advanced than basic hemming, I'd probably look for a better option and try to find reviews that specifically mention what you need them to do
I’m not aware of any differences between dry cleaner tailors and “dedicated” tailors
If you’re unsure you should contact your usual tailor and see if that’s something she can do
Regardless, 2 weeks is cutting it very close for suit adjustments, especially if you’re not 100% sure that they can be done
Right. My thinking was letting the jacket out a little bit would be on the straightforward side as far as suit alterations go, but don’t have much experience with this stuff. I’ve gone to her for trouser adjustments before, and trust her with those. She’s usually turned trousers over in a week.
I could also honestly put off the jacket alterations until after the event - it pulls at the waist but looks fine unbuttoned.
What I meant is that if you want the adjustments done, you should act fast
You should get in contact with your tailor and ask if the adjustments can be done before your deadline
Yeah, I’m planning on going today for sure, just was a question of whether I try someone new
how straightforward it is or isn't depends on if the jacket is lined/canvassed, where/how much it would be let out, any darting present, and material choice amongst other things
i would see if your tailor can do a rush job; the premium price would be worth the peace of mind imo
If you’re satisfied with your tailor’s previous work I see no reason to switch things up
