Half-Life 1 Unplayable with constant freezes.

So I'm trying to play the original Half-Life native linux port on my gtx1060 laptop and for whatever reason, the game is constantly freezing and resuming. I checked to see if it was using the Intel GPU but its using the dedicated one. I'm not sure what exactly is going on as there is nothing being written in the game logs nor the system. The power state of the laptop is plugged in with performance mode and temperatures are stable. I really am trying to avoid using proton on this title since the native support of the game allows me to mod it, and I haven't even done that yet. I hope anyone could guide me or give me a hint as to what could possibly be happening, or maybe actually know what the issue is. Thanks! Video footage provided.

This is gonna sound cursed but this is an actual workaround that fixes the issue. If you turn on the steam overlay and turn on the fps graph tool that comes with Steam, the issue banishes. Like, it no longer freezes. I don't understand how or why, but that's apparently the solution so far? I don't mind having the tool but its wild to think that you need to turn that tool on for the game to no longer freeze. Now it plays perfectly, so if you encounter the same issue... that's one workaround you can use. As for an actual solution without the fps overlay, I am unsure. So uhh, yeah. That's one workaround for sure. I'd still would like a solution without this hack/fix.
